Painting a car with rollers
Hey guys,
I was browing a Mini forum and someone posted a link to this article on painting a car with rust paint using foam rollers (go down to about the 9th
post of so by '69chargeryeehah' for the relevant topic).
Seems an interesting method of painting, and definitely good for someone without all the proper gear and no money, but obviously wont chieve as good a
finish as a properly sprayed car.
One of the problems I can see with this is that the paint they refer to isn't available here...do you think one of the locally available rust paints
would be OK (will need to have a squiz at the article to know what I'm talking about).
I have bought some sample pots of White Knight Rust Guard to test on an old panel. The colour range of these paints is limited but if you like any of
the colours it might be an option.
Any thoughts on the article would be appreciated.

It's hard to see in the pic, but is the roller you refer to a foam one? The ones mentioned in the article are high density foam rollers (quite hard
with very small air holes)

Mmmmmm yesssss it is foam. I would say it is dense compared to a carwash sponge. They specifically have ball shaped ends to help eliminate lines of
material/ product buildup. Available from professional automotive paint suppliers. Designed for the foam insert to be chucked after each use. A PPG or
Spies Hecker paint supplier should have them as it is in their range of products.

The username was Curious from ages ago when I was first looking into getting a Mini. I don't post there anymore (but I still like to browse now and
then) as I don't have the Clubby now :cry
Once number three came along, the family of five just didn't fit! Didn't want to sell it but it justed ended up being another insurance and rego to
pay, car to maintain, and we weren't getting as much use out of it.
On the bright side, at least the fund went towards getting our Bus!

Have a look at the link to the thread...there is talk about it and some links to pics of the various paint jobs. I agree though, does sound too good
to be true but alot of the guys seem to be praising the idea.

My local Spies Hecker shop said no such thing at first and then said they used to have the rollers but stopped stocking a couple of years ago- any
ideas?

PPG have the rollers-packs of ten plus handle and tray.
Thought I may try it on 72 Van to see what it looks like but where would you get paint such as Rustoleum
Only brushable/roller paint seems to be ag paint for farm equipment.

The roller I am using in the picture is a PPG roller. I used it to apply the PPG primer/ filler. Not intended for use with topcoat paint.

Pretty poor pictures (they were put up there in 1996 in internet infancy), but here is a bug I painted with a roller.
Looks good from 10 yards away. I would suggest white is the best colour to do, but you need to do plenty of T-cutting and Farecla G3 to get it flat.
I wouldn't recommend it on a car you want to restore properly later since getting enamel paint off will be a drama.

looks good ,ive used rollers, u should be able to get them anywhere virtually ,i just done my ski boat with rollers and it came up good ,but you have
to be a lot more careful when applying so it comes out even and doesnt streak,good luck |
