I got mine yesterday.

"Here have this for doing your time in service"

Kind of cheapens the idea behind getting a medal, in my honest opinion.

I agree, keep it up and you guys will look like those stupid yanks with a chest full... 1 year served, 2 years served, teeth cleaned, shoes tied up medals.

Money spent striking them could have been better spent giving you guys more of the stuff you NEED.

Nah

but its nice and shiny... ohh. shiny thing :):no::no: sad really when for years we crapped on them for getting ribbons for 'finishing basic training' 'firing a rifle (without killing themselves)' etc etc, now we are heading down the same road.................. maybe a few of the really senior were crapped off that they missed Vietnam and Timor so they wanted one more than just the Parramatta medal?

Could've saved the money to mint it and given it to the guys, or families of guys who lost their lives as a result of being forced to work in areas where OH&S was never a consideration eg F-111 fuel tanks.

and

Take it for what it is "recognition for time served in the defence force" you volonteered to join, small token of appreciation I guess.

that what the long service medal is for.
those who have stuck around for 15 and 20 years, to me that is medal worthy.
Not 4 years which you are contractualy obliged to.
Unless you have a serious injury, mental defect or a substance problem you will be in for your conpulsury 4 years.

And Craig "Maybe we could create another WAR for you to earn them!"
Thats just being silly.
I don't know anyone mentally sound that wants to go to war.

If you got a few already then this one just looks like the cheap addition thrown in on the end. Anyone who knows, will look past these and at the ones really earnt. I havent even applied for mine. The old Parramatta is really a medal without a medal, half the people with them have spent there lives in an office somewhere.

And that is what i am afraid of.
People seeing the medal as some sort of second prize.
In my job, i don't plan to see active service and it doesn't phase me on bit.
I applaud the guys who have a chest full or even just one medal as they have deserved it.

Don't get the two confused.
One is for long service and one is for obliging the contract you signed or for having the balls to sign up with the threat of being sent to some action somewhere. You can't tell me people will sign up just to get a nice shiny piece of tin.

Yeh most days when serving as a patrol boat sailor you do some crazy shit and not think about it, Most people sign up in peace times and never expect to be sent to a hot spot. Just because they dont see action doesnt mean they havent been in some immediate danger on many occasions, stuff that civillian life wouldnt throw up.I joined to have a good time and do some free travel, but when told to do the job i never expected i didnt shy away. The medal will only bring a poor reception if serving members make it that way.

I doubt that in this day and age anyone will sign up for the forces just for a medal...given that little johnny loves to send them away every chance he gets...

Well, maybe a few would, but most are going to give it a second rethink before signing up.

I was never too keen on the idea of a ROSO medal myself. Reading some of your thoughtss here though I can sorta understand. The extra hours, the Sh*tty little jobs that we all get stabbed for once in a while. The old quote "thats what service allowance is for" comes to mind, so i guess you can kinda look at it as being "thats what service allowance and the ADM is for."
Maybe its not a bad idea to recognise that serving is more than just a job with an award, but did it really need to be a medal? Maybe something along the lines of a commendation.

Either way, I havent got mine yet. Wasnt going to bother chasing it up but I just posted into a new unit & new job so i might help me not look like a Joob! :P

Sounds like one of my lot Lee.. he's at newcastle... but never know......

I do have to admit though that I am glad that a lot of my guys (no girls in my Units until lately and they haven't quit yet) get out right on their four years. But this should give a little recognition to those that do stay in for a wee bit longer I guess its a good thing for them to have as I can bet a huge amount of money that they won't stay in for the 15yrs it takes to get the Parramatta medal.

AFENG eh? I was posted as a GH to AFENG at CSU-EDN last year. Had a ball. Was meant to get all my plant tickets but they decided to close the section and with it any more spending. Saw the year out there and now remustered to ASOP.

I've noticed there are heaps of RAAFies AJ's and Pussa's heres. must be something to ADF that gets us into vee dubs.

The service medal just impresses people that dont know anything about the military. Id be too embarrased to wear a medal for just serving 4 years, if ive done 9 years can i get 2?.
Ive just read in the paper how those currently in timor arent even elligable for an active service medal? as its deemed non war like!. It all reeks of politics, no wonder theyre having retention problems in the military.
