Salt lake 2ltr.
Need to start assembling engine parts for the lakester project.
I was going to base the engine on the 2ltr Kombi case. The requirement is a 3 mile runup, 3 mile timed and another 3 for rundown. Want to run methanol
and blower using a primative draw through system, no electronics. Kinda old school. Hope to run close to 150 MPH at about 450kgs. What do you think
would be a nice engine combo? Suggestions on blowers? Would an engine capable of this require anything other than ram air for cooling?

on that line of thinking, i've gotta say 'cubes'....
i reckon it'll have more to do with getting the gear ratios right so that you get the most of whatever power you have.
what kinda body/chassis are you using?
i love the salt racer stuff, a guy at work goes to S.A. every year in a big old bus to race a '28 ford.... they've done about 175-180mph in
it...

I'll be out there in a few years hoping to crack 200mph . Its pretty expensive to get the stability of a car at that speed right .
Do you have dates on roughly when it is ?

You will get that with a stock 2lt with a cam change.
Blower wise see what you can find.
Henry has my old Godfrey-Marshall roots set-up and a very nice replacement
unit that is in much better shape....he has for sale...he is HS618 in this forum.
Let me know when you start what you might need to know regarding fuel system and camshaft.
Man you could achieve that with a 1776 and volksy case...cool!

Forget the draw thru set up, mechanical injection is the way - and you are gonna have to move a hell of a lot of methanol!

BTW, love the idea.

For mine, I'd be going with the Toyo 1GGZE blower, pick your max revs (6500 ? depending on bottom / top end combo I guess) and overdrive such that
you run the blower at near its max reccomended revs at redline. This at least gives you a budget option - these blowers are usually easily available
for $350 to $500 mark.
And yes, lots of Methanol
If you got the ducting set up right, and didnt spend too much time idling around, I would think the ram air cooling would be OK - certainly the
methanol fed speed car motors never used to run cooling fans, and they were worked very hard, lots of WOT etc.
Do you have a name for the car yet ? Speed record cars always need a name....

have you started work on the body/chassis yet? or is the whole thing still on the drawing board?
couldn't you just use an f-vee chassis with a few mods?
i love the idea! there's a distinct lack of volkswagens on the salt.

That M90 is a nicely machined unit, but is a pain to rebuild.
If you can afford to carry a spare, it is an affordable option, but may be limited with boost.

Been thinking...
I would use a dry sump system, 1800 type 4 crank with counterweights, and larger bore with forgies (98mm).
You can use mechanical injection thru an old 2port hilborn deal and run port nozzles if the distrobution is sad.
Ram air should be OK if it is concentrated on the heads.
I have a free 3-71 blower if you want real old school, but it will need race prepping.

Dave I'd be interested in the 371. If the rotors are OK will it just need bearings and seals?
I had a look at Peter Gumleys type 4 open wheeler with Whipple supercharger. It has 2 small round plenums on each head and a small (1/2" deep) one
under the s/c. Is this a common setup, is it just to allow the s/c to be mounted low over the case or does it have other advantages?

Yes that is all it needs Pete..it is very old off a diesel, but never raced.
I would say that his plenums are like that (low) just to keep everythong down close to the case.
Screw blowers dont really need a plenum to absorb the pulses like a roots blower traditionally has.
Reality is though that the screw does pulse, and the rootes does too but in a different way.
But it seems that a plenum is an easy way to join a big flat flange under a blower, to to some tubes that lead to the heads.
Try to keep the plenum as small as possible without restricting flow.
Mike K has done a brilliant job with his one on Cranky.

Looks like Blown Fuel Lakester (G/BFL) is still without a record so that might be the one to run for. G/BGL (gas)currently stands at 204 MPH.
