first time rider? - start on a dirt bike or a hybrid dirt/road bike and work your way up from there - after a year or so then maybe look at getting an
old ninja or something to play around with and when confident with the weight etc spend a little more and get yourself something nice..

ask yourself, what do u want from a bike? different bikes will do different things so think about what u will use it for.... dont go all out for a
bg bike first up as you will not enjoy it as much go smaller and second hand then if anything happens u are not quite as piss or out of pocket...
if your after a fun bike go something like the honda nc35, a bloody ace package that goes well handles like a dream and most importantly its very
forgiving so being new to the bike world u will get away with a lot more on a bike like this than say the duke's
dirt= i use a WR410 but it is a full on moto and is not really ment for the road, it chews the crap out of tyres and general servicing is higer so
watch out for that, other styles are better but they are not as good offroad
as i say its really about what u want it for...fun..offroad...getting to and from work......
really the best thing u can do what ever style you want is buy second hand till you used to riding and happy with it all u knows......
steff....

My old man and i took the new Triumph Bonnie for a run a few weeks back and were blown away by how nice the bike was. So responsive and quick and easy
to ride.
They didn't have a Thruxton to ride but man I walked away raving about the Bonnie.
You couldn't go wrong taking one of those for a run.

I've had my motorbike licence for about 4 years now. Started off during my learner period using a Honda VT250 Custom. (similar to a Yamaha Virago -
cruiser style bike). Fantastic bike for a learner. Handles well, not too powerful so as not to scare the crap out of you when you make a small error
but still enough power to get you out of trouble if need be. I clocked up about 35,000k's before I traded it in on my next bike.
The next bike I got was a Harley davidson Sportster XL1200S (racing version). As it is a v-twin engine, there are no surprises as you wind the
throttle through the rev range, just heaps of torque!! Plenty of usable power (it is 1200cc!!!), exhaust note that was highly acceptable (to me, not
my neighbours). Heaps of fun to ride and as it is one of the lighter and more nimble bikes within the HD range, easy to use as a commuter (chalked up
another 18,000kms). That bike I owned for exactly 12months to the day before it was written off in an accident (not my fault but as a rider, that is
usually irrelevant, it all hurts the same!!). Incidently, I T-Bonned a Commodore which did a turn in front of me. ouch!! I now ride a HD 1200C
(custom sportster). yep, got back on the bike as soon as my injuries healed. Only way to do it. Pisses off my boss (had 8weeks off work through
injury), keeps my neighbours awake at 5am (I am a fruiturer), Keeps me happy and out of mischief (or a useful aid for getting into mischief).
The best thing is that I can keep my beloved VW stock standard and when I feel the need for speed, jump on the bike. Theres nothing like having ones
cake and eating it too...

hey thanks for the input guys.. the more informed from others experiences the better the choices i hope to make..
it will be primarily used for a home to work and back with a good ride day out once n a while with the boys from work sorta deal so a road bike will
be the thing i will be after..
off road is fun had a wee bash at that when i was a mad 16 year old and then played with a yami tri z trike for a while, was fun but now want a
roady..
im not particulary after a monster power machine but figured maybe a 600-800 will suffice me all the same..
i have been drivin for some 18 yrs now, all sorts of vehicles and machines so i feel its about time to get on a bike and discover the road from a
different perspective while having some fun at the same time..
cheers for your input.. keep it comin.. :thumb

ZZR's are underrated. They are down on power compared to others, but are still plenty fun to ride. They're relatively cheap and fairly simple.
They also feel heavier than pure sports bikes ('cause they are!), and ride more like a tourer. Slightly more comfortable riding position too.
Really depends what you want to spend, 6-10 grand depending on age and condition for a good ZZR600.
At least with a sports/tourer as your first bike you can more easily decide whether you want to go pure sports, or just touring for your next one.
Enjoy!
A POSSE AD ESSE.
I live in my own little world, but it's okay, they know me here.

I rode dirt bikes for a long time (whilst learning the fundamental skills necessary to survive on the road [ie. reflexes to deal with numb-nut driverswho don't think what they are doing]).
I stepped up to a Yamaha FZ6 (600cc) and have been really pleased with its performance since. The pic is during renovations on our house (hence dirt
everywhere).
It was bought primarily for a commuter to and from work with the odd stint on weekends - I used to travel to work with my wife so having a comfortable
passenger seat was critical. Also it had to be a more upright riding position as my back would struggle with the low slung sports bikes since I am
6'2.
This has a R6 engine detuned for better low and mid range torque (great for city riding). Anyway, I am stoked with it - wouldn't want to do too many
long highway trips as the naked style certainly doesn't help with wind deflection. Good luck in whatever bike you end up with (there are so many to
choose from!).

buy a naked bike.
If your shiny fully faired yamazooki 900rrri falls off the sidestand when you are caressing it with a de-linted linen cloth, you will be up for a few
grand to fix it.
I ride a classic bmw 600, fun, keeps me legal and reliable. Also not a Universal Japanese Motorcycle.
Also , road bikes for road, off road for off road.
luck!

2 cents...
H,
I started out on dirt bikes, then bought a yammie XT 250 for work and back and play. Useless on the highways and made me wish I bought at least a
400-500cc dual purpose.
The worst thing about owning my 851 Duke was practicing to throw myself under it if I dropped it.....:P
Also the Insurance costs were horrifying....
Depends what you want....work and play...get a dual purpose.
Work and back and an odd trip...get a dedicated street bike, with a little more oomph than a 250....I think even Hoggley XL883's are allowed as a
first bike due to power/weight ratio.....
BMW F650 might be a good compromise....
While an Aprilia RS250 might be the ticket they don't call them Learner Life Loser for nothing....

you can't go past a 600 or 650..
the fz6, honda hornet 600 even the f650 are great
I had a 600 hornet and my mate had a bmw 650 dakar....
the hornet did 210 with heaps left and gets to 100 before you can say it...nakeds have chaper insurance rates and don't age as quick as faired
bikes....
riding position is more confortable than a sports bike...especially if you are commuting not just going on weekend rides...
Anyway, they don't sell the 600 hornet new here anymore...even though its one of the best selling bikes in europe.

i still say go the Honda Nc35 its a v4 with bags of grunt all the way through the range, handles great and is very comftable to ride short or long
journeys. Its got enough power to keep with most 600's and some 750's.
I went from a 98 fireblade(900) to the Nc35 and i used to harrase the crap out of my mates on CBR600's ZXR750's FZR600's. the only place i used
to lose out was right at the top end (over 140mph) round the bends i would smoke them and on the drag i could keep right with them(maybe droping a
bikes length up to 140mph)
They are a heap of fun while being a very forgiving bike ideal for a learner and it will entertain you just as easily when you gain confidence.
As for the FZ6N that das is talking about i test rode one this firday jusy gone and i can see it being a heap of fun, very easy to ride, smooth power
and the potentail to entertain heap with little to no mods. over 100k it starts to buff you around tho so if u are after the whole speed thing mite
not be for u or go the FZ6S same bike but with top fairing. I myself prefer the n but thats mainly cuz i am a bloody idiot on a bike and i have family
to think about nows so i dont want a full on sports bike.
Oh one last thing the NC35 is nice to ride even for me and i am the same size as das 6,2 so don't be put of by size...

I ride a motorbike to work every day(60km's a day) in Sydney (including this last week of crap weather). I have Suzuki Freewind, it is a DR650 motor
in a more road friendly frame. 19" front wheel, wide bats and a "sit up and beg" seating positon. I have racked up over 20,000km in the last 12
months alone on it and it is at 60,000km now. Last service was about 10,000km (don't ask why......) and it is still going strong. They are close to
bloody bullet proof.
They are basically a BMW F650 rip off.
As they are getting a bit long in the tooth now, I would suggest looking at a the newer Suzuki DL650, sure they are not pretty but they commute really
well and to be honest unless you are going at hyper speeds I have never had a rider pull away from me. In fact on my Freewind I usually am one of the
first in as they great through the really twisty stuff as you can back it in and then wheelie out!
And after they are all stuffed from riding I get back on and still feel good. Have done close to 600km in a day and felt ok at the end of it.
Also the service/parts costs are not too bad and the insurance (QBE Western) is really good on the suzuki's.

hey all..
just an update been too busy to get my A into gear but am having a week off shortly n will finally get that pesky licence..
then the fun will begin for a new toy to learn on and get me to work n back as well as ride up n down the coast regulary..
i am considering a few but the honda RVF400 as steff suggested is up there as well as a suzuki sv650s n so is a 'cheap' newish 250 road bike to
begin on.. the bonus is that my g/f is going for her bike licence as well (same time)
so it looks like we will have two to choose from..
any more stories or pointers will be appreciated..
cheers paul

You still haven't told us what you want to do with it.
I ride mine to work with my wife on the back, so I need something comfortable. I also rode dirt bikes since I was 12 so wanted something with the
upright dirt bike style.
I got a Suzuki DL650 Vstrom, I think one of the best value bikes on the market. It is like the SV650 but more practical. It's cheap, goes really
well, gets great economy (between 4.5-5L/100km) and about 400km range from it's 22L tank.
I rode it to Valla a few years ago, and it was great fun. Went the twistiest way I could, and after the 600km down I still felt fine.

On a weekride ride with friends I'll keep up with anything in the corners. Just ask 555bug, we've been on rides together.

Here's 555bug following me on his VTR1000 firestorm (doing a wheelstand)

that day we also had my friends in a westfield and skyline with us

with lots of kms definitely have a good look at the Vstrom.
The SV650S is good but a bit of a sporty position for lots of kms.
The SV650 has a more comfortable position, but has no fairing for highway travel.
I would rule out all of the sports bikes if you do a lot of km. Anything that uses soft sports bike rubber will cost you heaps in tyres.
The Vstrom uses semi-offroad tyres which last for ages and grip surprisingly well. I should get at least 20,000kms from my Metzler Tourances. Some
guys on sportbikes I know only get 3,000km from their tyres.
Then there is insurance. Anything classed as sports is quite expensive. The Vstrom is classed as a tourer so is in a much better insurance class.
I also got 30,000km out of my last chain and sprockets, which is much better than the dirt bikes I've had.

yeah the strom is nice. The view from a tall dirt bike or vstrom is fantastic in traffic, as you can see in the rear window of a 4x4 and out their
front window, so they don't totally block your view of what's going on in front.
I get different loaner bikes from the bike shop when mine gets serviced, and they are smaller height bikes. I really notice how bad the visibility is
on them. I fell much safer on the strom, especially when in heavy traffic.
I noticed someone said a triumph bonnie. I get one of them regularly as a loaner. I don't really like the bonnie at all. It's very very small, it
feels like a small engine with a big carb, it sorta takes a little bit to wind up. Technically it is very old skool, which is why some people like it,
but also why I don't think it's value for money. And in summer the heat off the engine at traffic lights cooks your legs, which would really get to
you if you had to live with it every day.
Bix on here bought an SV650S not too long ago. He should be able to add some input.
The vstrom is too quiet stock (most bikes are), and as such I had a lot of cars try to change lanes into me (cos they couldn't hear I was there, and
they don't look).
So I got the baffle modified by motorcycle exhaust professionals at slacks creek. They charge around $240 all up I think, for a new baffle to bring it
from 84?dB up to 92.4dB, nice and close to the 94dB limit. That price included the ~$45 noise test and certificate so I can't get hassled by police.
I rarely get cars change lanes into me any more, and the V-twin sounds cool

OK well already sent you a U2U,
But i ended up with a SV650s (as wes said). I was in the same place your were over last summer, looking for a nice mid sized bike, and spend about 70%
of my time commuting, 15% in the hills, and 15% on the highway. Also i had never riden a motorbike before Qride, done a fair bit of MTB and downhill
etc. I wanted a medium powered 600, something that i wouldn't get bored with, while also not so much power that if was going to kill me. My uncle is
huge Duke fan (has a 749s at present). Intially I was looking at all bikes, but he kept on saying a Vtwin was the best. Intially I was also looking at
naked bikes as i didn't want a fairing, as i knew i was going to drop it (and i have once, plus got taken out by a car, the bike and i went for a
slide), but after riding a naked on the freeway, and then the bikini faired sv650s.... the small bikini fairing is a awesome thing, just takes the
buffeting off you. more comfortabe. In terms of riding posisition, i ride the s, so more sporty than the naked sv. I'am 6'2" and have long legs,
torso and short arse arms, so end up bent over. After about 1.5hrs I get numb hands. but also if you use your abbs you really take the weight of your
wrist and you will build a nice six pack!!. I would love to have a K1200s BMW for touring, the Sv for commuting and a s4r for the weekends.....
Initally i loved the look of the FZ6n.....
so my choices where
ER5 - Old version of er6- parrel twin, budget bike.
ER6n- seems to be getting good reviews, great all round bike, basic suspension, and the looks sucked. (personal thing)
Sv650- Vtwin!! big broad power and TORQUE curve. mid range suspension, medium power
Sv650s- Same as above, but with bikini fairing, takes the wind out. Sweet bike! (might upgrade to the thou next year for a bit more power)
Fz6n- Inline 4, great little naked bike. having never riden a bike before i found the top end rush a bit much for me, and had to keep it spinning.
After riding for 10months, i would now like to give it another go and i think i would like it. (almost got one, but they wouldn't come down another
$100 dollars for me....... )
FZ6- Same as above but windy
Ducati 620- Duke, it has the name, but service costs are bad, and it sounds like its about to die when the clutch is in (though would like its s4r or
s4rs bike brother)
GXR600- Suzuki's version of the FZ6.... new bike
Take into account service costs, gear costs, and tires. Run sport tires (bridgestone 014's) and get about 6k out of a set, could go the 020's and
get more, but like better grip. I spend about $300 for a set of 014's so cheap. but can spend up to $500 if you buy from team moto or similar.
I have no sympathy for my car, only the wallet that pays for it!

Have you thought about a mid 90s VFR750? very good allrounder, check out http://www.ozvfr.net
I ridden a few of those and always enjoyed the ride, I'm currently on a GSXR1000K6, well, I was until a 4wd cleaned me up, hopefully the guys
insurance will finally pay up so I can get it back on the road, the two bikes before that were hayabusas (that's me on my last busa at turn 2 at
eastern creek in my avatar piccy)
