rear swaybar setup?


has anyone got any pics of their rear swaybar setup on an IRS bug or Type 3?

I'm looking at a whiteline 27mm rear swaybar kit for the back of my buggy for khanacross/motorkhana and I want to see how it mounts and stuff. BTW, do people think this bar might be too fat, would a 22 or a 24mm be better?

My new rear bar on the 750kg Spyder is 16mm and adjustable. 27mm sounds big? Built by Don Selby who's working from a small workshop in the Shire now days.



Spyder-WISD 07-09-05 11.6s @ 125 MPH

Speedster-WISD Nats 05 14.4s @ 89 MPH

Jet cruiser-Coogee 22-09-05 900 deg C @ 110,000 rpm

They all seem to mount on the torsion tube just under, or just forward of the gearbox front mount and to the lower shock bolts. Pulled one off one of my toys yesterday

What you are planning is WAY too fat for dirt, I reckon. You need some compliance

to much for dirt, and you may find if the rest of your suspension isn't sorted, you will lift inside wheels.

I spent 2 years playing with my suspension setup trying different bars, springs and setitngs an will always fiddle with it, just try it and see. sway bars are cheap.....




I have no sympathy for my car, only the wallet that pays for it!

I am running the white line adjustable 24mm. For dirt its a bit to much. but with a second front sway bar, and the rear dialed up a little its awesome on bitumen. But it also comes down to your driving style etc. Intially i liked a taily car, but bow and liking a little less oversteer than i used to. I would recomend getting maybe the smaller sway bar and then playing. As i know when i was setting my car up, I talked to Jak about his setup at the time (back in 2000) and in the end my setup is very different. horses for courses.........

Motorkhana, i find its an advantage (got it set up a little taily). khanacross is so so. higher speed stuff its an advantage. But saying that, what other settings do you have....... springs, shocks, ride height etc.......

hey Bix all i seem to find with a rear sway bar is that when cornering it picks up the inside wheel and does not get traction to the ground. motorkhana, especially bitumen, the rear sway bar would be fine, but for dirt, i would never use a sway bar on the rear again.
just what i have found.
when are you coming up here to race?????

I also find that a biggger rear bar leads to more inside rear wheel spin. Perhaps a big rear bar and LSD go together. The LSD gives a bit more understeer which can be balanced up by a bigger rear bar that gives a bit more oversteer. But the LSD will solve the spinning inside rear wheel spin. I didn't want to buy a LSD, you've go to draw the line somewhere, so I fitted a smaller swaybar.

I need something that can help a very heavy rear end break loose. Once it does, SUBIE POWER does the rest. :thumb

I'll try the rear swaybar first and then go to stiffer springs afterwards, but I tell you, anything has to better than the understeering pig of plough I currently have. :o

Vw rally car, I tend to run some very sticky semi slicks and this limits inside wheel spin on all but the tightest hairpins. Also i was running a 1776 (mild with about 100hp) so maybe with the new motor, a lsd will be in order. On autocross/hillclimb and sprints the big rear bar is fine, but I find on loose khanacross i tend to be either sliding or in a straight line under power. I also run some very agressive semi slicks on loose dirt (they were designed as a speedway tire, and are road legal)

Hopefully next year, this year has been a off year, as the 1776 died and i am still saving and hording parts for the new motor which i hope to run in over xmas....

NEW

Got VWcool's old sway bar (ta man :) ) on the car yesterday and it's much better. The whole car sits flatter and drives better. Be interesting to see how it goes on the dirt in fury. I tried it on a bit of gravel yesterday arvo with my rally tyres on too (ta Secoh :kiss), but with a case of Corona in the passenger seat I thought I should take it a bit easy. :D

I'll have pics of the setup on my website in the buggy diary.
