Guages

My uderstanding is that Smiths were a very good guage, british from memory. I think they stopped making them a few years back and changed their name
to Pricol and produced a cheaper unit. Could be wrong but I have found the pricol sender to work fine. |

Smiths Gauges were fitted to Austin, Morris, Riley, Wolseley, MG, Leyland, Rover including Land Rover & MOST U.K. Made Vehicles.
but they were NEVER fitted to Volkswagen or Porsche Vehicles... and I hope never will.... A British Part in a German Car... NEVER...
I wonder if they are used in the NEW Mini [BMW]:o they were used in Morris Mini Minors, Riley Elf & Wolseley Minis, Leyland Minis & the
Australian Made Mini MOKE..:o

Did you know that the original Smiths Instruments UK Pty Ltd was taken over by Lucas in 1983, and in turn by VDO in 1990? VDO decided to close the old
Smiths factory in South Wales in 1993, but a new consortium was then set up to make a new series of 'Smiths' instruments. A more detailed
history can be found at http://www.gower-oaks.co.uk/

The current webpage for the new Smiths Instruments company is http://www.caigauge.com/

The quality of the little 52mm VDO gauges is nothing to write home about either. Until the early '90s, they were made in Australia (in the
Melbourne factory built right across the road from the old VW plant - can you guess why?). The plastic cases eventually perished and fell apart. Today
the 52mm VDO gauges are made in Malaysia.

Well I'm the Club Veedub trivia pro...guess it's my job ! :-)

Internet search engines play a big part though. I just did a search for 'Smiths Gauges' and those sites came up.
