Left Hand Drive Samba
Hi Chaps and Chapesses,
I'm over here on old pommie land and will be emigrating to Oz shortly. Gonna live in Vic and wanted to bring me Samba.
I've just read an article that left hand drive motors are not allowed in the country and now I'm a tad concerned!
Can any enlighten if this is fact? Country wide or state law only?
Any advive would be appreciated.
Cheers all

My understanding is you can keep it and register is a LHD so long as it is greater than 30 years old. I'll think you'll pass....:thumb

yah, no probs at all, my uncle just brought in a 57 chev belair from the states, got a permit, drove it from Brisbane to Melbourne, got plates and
away he goes, no mods needed, no need to display a warning on the car that it is LHD, no need to sit a special test to drive it or anything. very
easy.
looking foward to seeing another samba in Vic.

Ocourse you will need to stop calling it a Samba once you are here eh Dave!
LOL
BTW post a pic for us to see.
I have a feeling if you bring a 23 into Australia that you will earn some credit towards Australian residency status. LOl mitchl

Cheers for the reply lads,
Your replies have put me at ease...Damn Pommie airticles getting it wrong again lol!
I'm afraid its not a 23 window but a 21 window so hopefully it will still score me some points with you guys? lol
The bus is still in primer at the mo but its coming together, I ahve spent loads of time and put loads of effort into it so far to get a straight rust
free bus as it was full of filler and bodged metal hiding the rust then covered in underseal so I could see!
Everything looked good until I started poking at it with a screw driver. Anyway, many many many months later (a few years infact) after most panels
replaced and travelling over England to get them, its getting closer to completion.
The bus will be IRS's with a narrowed beam on the front and will also be on air-bags. I've decided to stay with a VW engine and opted for a 1641
Laurie Pettitt built motor. The interior is being fitted professionally by a local chap Vaughan Green and will be in Port and Cream colour
The exterior will be the same colour with a cream top and metallic deep red for the base. I used to work as an airbrush artist so will be designing an
Aussie theme on the bus. Very different to do that over here maybe not so much with you guys but spose i could change the desing to 'Litte Britain'
before I come over lol. My partner is an aussie to so its a tribute to her patience aswell and all things aussie.
Still have thought about a sound system but want a DVD palyer in their to and sat nav. So I hope the bus qualfies with you guys and can't wan't to
travell the Great Ocean Road and go to some meets
Infact I'm over this December and looking for a purchase to store at my mates farm for something for me to get my teeth stuck into
Anyone have a Crew Cab....Karmann Ghia etc?? lol
By the way....What do they call Samba's down there??
If you've read this far good on ya...I do on on a bit..
All the best
Woody
