wasser boxer into square back
I am thinking of putting a 1.9l watercooled vw boxer into my type 3. anyone done anything with one of these engines.
The list of add ons includes a stainless extractor exhaust that I run now, 1.4 rockers, Wolf 3D computer running da show and a lightened flywheel.
your thoughts? |

If you are going watercooled a subaru motor would be cheaper and more reliable. It's the same amount of work

He probably wants to keep it all VW, like it should be!!:P
And it will bolt up with out an adapter, give stock ground clearance, fit into the engine bay with out cutting anything, (just a little clearancing
for the clutch.) a 1.9 with 1.4 rockers and a free flowing exhaust will make good power to move a type 3 quiet well, and it will be as reliable as you
make it. Sounds good to me.
And they Turbo nicely too.

Ray Box, who runs the Jamboree, did this conversion way back...I think it was in
1990, before the first Jamboree!
Anyhow it was a fantastic conversion...had to put the radiator up front from memory,
but these days thetre are plenty of discussions about that on here.
He was able to find a european flywheel that made it a bolt-in.
It went very well...1915 with EFI and 10:1 comp.
Very good engine. Just a cam change and some intake runners that dont kill the flow,
and you have a rocket...or just fit a turbo.

tanks for the comments boys,
Sticking to a vw engine is probably .... well a sticking point.
The wasser box has this going for it from what I can see from a partial strip down...of the motor that is!
instant capacity, although I was happy with 1600, plus mods.
matched valve sizes to cc increase (factory)
big oil pump
oil filter
hydraulic lifters
exellent ports (you can almost see the seat on the shortside radius of the ports)
Water cooling, dred I say it but only for the cabin heating aspect.
Water cooling, oops, ok then for the sustained horse power increase
And of course some sundry things like big clutch,nice engine hanger,E.F.I. and alot more space in a t3 engine bay! |

Maybe on a modified Subi sump, but not a standard one, they are about 4 inches lower than a WBXer sump.

Hi
I did it in 1988 with a 2.1 WBX into a bug, they are sweet motor, you will need a 215 mm Kombi flywheel, the WBX has an unfair reputation for cooling
system problems, most of these come about by not running factory coolant with distilled water.
