I'd go a 40 channel UHF. I work as a diesel mechanic and about two out of eighty trucks my boss owns have the old CB. I'd recommend you buy a UHF, as you'll be able to get road condition/traffic information from a fair few truck drivers en route to your destination (Generally Ch. 40)
I use a UHF in my 4WD for those reasons.
It's all a matter of personal preference really.

Yeah you'd be hard pressed to even buy one I reckon!
For about $150 to $250 you'll buy a decent UHF, but you'll also need a pre-tuned arial and co-axial cable... these things add up!

Hand helds are just too bulky most of the time, and when you've got a 'dash-mount' already you'd be best to stay that way I reckon.
Definately be able to buy one for less than $398.

Yes a mobile UHF Radio with a high gain antenna will beat any hand held......

With a hand held Radio, You have no actual ground plane for the antenna....
and the handheld antennas aren't much chop anyway...
they are a compromise....

He He
I still have a 27 meg, but never use it anymore, the UHF is the in thing now! I sort of miss all that old crappy jargon we use to use in the 70's, I wonder if anyone has one of those Dick Smith CB Jargon books hiding in a back room cupbord? My set is just a dash ornament now. Im too lazy to take it out! I spose ill have to fork out and get a UHF. I can still remember the signals (hand during the day and cab light at night) we used to use to warn oncomming fellow truckies about hiding highway patrol or mobile scaleys before 27 meg CB radio came onto the market!

Yes, My first contacts were with the truckies, and the scales up north.... blue lights etc....
It was best when it was illegal..... lol.....

UHF Sets can use repeaters, which are all over the country
to give You extra range... Your signal is broadcast again from the repeaters....
And they all scan etc.... some have extra channels to listen too.....
