Many people don't have the heaters connected, or even have heater boxes in their air cooled VWs...
I have always had a heater in My VWs.....
I have two new heater boxes in My beetle and it works fine....
with -1C in the morning..... You need something....

If You have heaters always check the Silver foil air hoses in Your Beetle, are connected, as if they come off, the engine loses its cooling air.... very bad....
Always use hose clamps....
between the fan shroud and the heater boxes...

PS.. I have since installed a hose clamp on the RH side hose..

hmm... speaking of heater channels... on my 69, just took off some padding that surrounds the heater channel tubing under the rear seats, to find black panels (look like replacements, cause there in dam good nick!) But... its thick guaze, like... black metal tubing, with lots of little holes in it!!

Is this for warming the seats?

thats just how they are
they're wrapped up so they dont really age
for some reason boredom probably i removed the padding from them in my 71 and they were spotless

i dunno why the metal is perforated but it doesnt let out any heat there it just directs it to the heater channels and the outlet in the kick panels

More than likely you have a non 100% seal on the #1 and 3 heater box clamp joins.

VW SHOULD HAVE USED FLANGED CONNECTIONS HERE!!!

Next time your motor is out get a flange kit put on.

Grab hold of the clamed joins and see if there is any movement back and forth.
Also look for black marks from leaking joins

The SS wire mesh seals are a heap better than the fibre ones.

Also spread the ends on the clamps so as it sits "around" the join better

Are Flange kits or Flanges available at any of the vw shops or do we have to make them up ourselves?
Cheers

You buy them from various places here.

I know V Force has them

Hippi

have you given the motor a good wash down??

Oil on the heater boxes is common

Cool, I'll pay him a visit soon. Ive got my current header done (cut flanges off an old header) but I,m updating shortly.

What about 3 bolt flanges, the ones between header & muffler pipe?

Cheers

My heaters work dandy hehe.. so long as I dont turn them off!

Then I cant turn em back on again without somebody fiddling with em underneath...

The solution?... leave the sliding window open in warm weather and drive with the heaters permanantly on! :tu:

Bla heaters! I like driving my splitty in seven degrees, windows open (the quartervents whistle loudly when shut), skiing gloves and warm jacket on, blanket over the knees like a granny. Keeps you awake at 1am, or maybe that was just 'cause it was the Great Ocean Road.
I do agree they can be nice sometimes. My daily Bay heats quite OK if you're up the front, I don't know what my passengers are always complaining about though. :P
I got really heaps of fumes up front when I put a new muffler on (a typeIV bay). As in, after a few minutes you could SEE the smoke coming out the dash heat vents! I almost had my head out the window to breathe! I never quite figured out why the exhaust air was coming into the heating system on that bus. It stopped after a few minutes, the smells after a few hours.

I have a sort of petrolly aircooled engine bay smell that comes from my heaters all the time, and also sometimes a hot oil smell presumably from the coating of oil on the bottom of the motor from leaking tubes.

It's not overpowering tho... and to be quite honest... I love the aroma! :tu:

I just make sure I drive with the sliding window in the back open... to let out a bit of the carbon monoxide that I am sure must be present in the heating air! :duh

Who cares if the back seat pax are cold.... so long as I am toasty up front! :D
