That's an original SAIER A1 Buggy (made in Germany).
The Germans made more similar strange Buggy kits.

The most popular (still available today) of them is the ALBAR STE Buggy.

wouldn't be the first. might interest you to know that old VW fanatics comment more about it than any other part of the car, and the comments are generally positive too.

Anyway, I asked the question coz I couldn't figure out why people put front and rear spoilers on buggies. But if it was made that way, well...what can I say, we had poragas sell in the hundreds in australia, so there's no accounting for taste here either.

mmm, just a had peak at this site. Certainly different to anything in Australia or the US. Let's just say I think I prefer German look Beetles to German look buggies.
