Shift Rod Removal

Can anyone tell me if the shift rod is difficult to remove in a '68 Bug and, if there is any tricks to it's removal?

It's time to put some new fuel line through the tunnel!

I thought that since it's raining up here, might be a good job for tomorrow.

thanks in Advance!

Craig

Never done a '68, but the earlier ones feed forward and need a little rotation as you go to clear various parts.
Make sure you take off the cover plates at the pan head, and on the apron.
I use pliers through the shifter hole to lever it forward.
Put plenty of lube on the shaft as you sluce it back in and it will not be so painfull.
Get you minds out of the gutter you blokes!!

Broom handle with a nail in the end. Then get some thin rope and put a loop in the end, and put the loop over the nail. Remove the front plates as Dave has suggested and push the broom handle into the hole from the front of the car holding the rope tight. Using a torch you can guide the broom handle right up to the shift rod. Place the loop in the rope over the shift rod where the gear lever sits and then pull the rope from the front of the car.

Remember to replace the trundle bush for the shift rod, and use lubricant!

Thanks Craig

Does the trundle bush come out with the Rod? Or is it fixed in the tunnel somehow?

Sometimes comes out with the rod, it is held in by a groove in the bush and a metal ring (like a key ring)

I'm also putting a new length of stainless tube for a new fuel line. Iwas going to run it through the car next to the tunnel. Didn't think of putting it through the tunnel. Let me know how it works out

Just to comment

I "think" ADR or something says fuel line cant be run single skinned in passenger compartment or exposed.

So, not under the car and not in the car.

Makes it difficult, but a series of holes down the tunnell is best.
Think there is pictures of this being done in WVMA last issue of editor Craig Hughes car

Hi Anthony

Just emailed the file.

C

ps The proposed insertion of fuel line was a non-event due to the 8 deg temp in the garage.

Didn't even play golf on the weekend either..!!!!
