Dak-A-Tak yellow, New Car Trailer ( 7/4/012)

The Dak Shop!!! is hard at work again . I have decided its time to make it happen ( Yellow Drag Car) with all motor rules ,may be changing in near future. And with Warwick around the corner I'm very pumped up! The list is very huge but this car has been siitting to long (3 years I think ) ,last time out 11.3et. Dak-A-Tak bug is my very first vw street car, drag car, looking to be a 10sec car.

Rear window

I change the rear window to an oval ,so the wing will be 2inchs higher then befor because the car sit so much lower now.( carb clearance ).Will be making a boom box cover for motor. Not sure on style yet. Next job ,a tow strap point off roll cage, work out rear gaurds postion on body.1, Craig Paton you better be getting ready your car for Warwick.2.Allan how did you go with the Ghia 's motor.3 Pete ,the front will stay for all motor ( some changes inmind yet ( no head lights ,wind refleckor on rear gaurd opening )

Pete, eventually it all got sorted - couldn't get it going on the first weekend because we fried the mallory ignition module. I originally borrowed Brad's coil after mine was faulty, but the replacement I received was a different model. I forgot to check if that particular model required a ballast resistor - it did, but of course I didn't put one one = fried module. D'oh. All is good now though - lots of fun! It will be down at Valla.

The oval section looks good by the way! Any plans yet for colour scheme or too early/secret to say?

Hey Pete

I'm tryin. The fuel line through the tunnel has been given me the crappers. Once I do that, I'll only have the electricals to the engine and the fuel line to the webbers.

Touch wood, everything else will be OK..! It hasn't done many miles.!!

Really lookin foward to seeing your Yellow 1 on the track again. :thumb

More work !

The towing point as been a brain pain!! what ,where, to mount one.Decided through roof and middle for easy eye sight of tow rope when towing .Didn't want to tow from underneath car ( pulls on body) or through windsceen (roll bar to far away ). Graig fuel line doesn't have to go through tunnel ( Rods is around pan edge )

2007 March Update!!!

Finally !!! back on job !!!
The Glass front is away getting lights filled, edge on rear lip of front guards , and damage fixed but my mate doing the work has got a surprise mod in mind !!
Arrived from USA , short axles , breather box (clyde berg),
and coming ,rear disc brakes (shaun geers ), bronze bushing springplates ,new geers oil filter ( pics latter ).

Next job is to fit rear fibre glass guards and work out wheels offset and buy new wheels (maybe bogarts )

Still thinking about paint ( yellow so good ).
Has any one got a outline drawing or picture so I can colour in for visual design( please )
Maybe someone can help me with paint design?
Was thinking silver with bottom a goldy yellow colour and in between two bright colour stripes !!!!! Know secret here!!!!! on build up!!!!

This week-end job is dummy up short axles and rip out all
new wiring on chassis (new idea's ) and clean chassis .
More soon !!!!

Great stuff Pete - I'm looking forward to more pics!

On a side note, I dropped into Dave's this arvo to pick his brain about some drivetrain questions - I am hoping the have the oval running the turbo/efi for warwick if all goes to plan.

What are your plans for this in terms of timing? I know its hard to answer as time always blows out more than expected, but do you think you'll have it ready for warwick, or will you race the chop top again?

PS Bogarts are cool! :thumb

Just a couple of hours Pete - we were reminiscing about the mid 90s watching some footage of the jamboree!

Now I have to start searching for a core swing axle g'box (late 1300)....then the ball can start rolling!

It would be great to see both the yellow (although not sure what the new colour will be?) and the chop....but that would keep you hands extremely full :)

Please forgive my ignorance Pete, but is that cage welded or bolted? Either way it looks the bizzness...and where would be a good place to start putting one in a street Beetle, certification, engineering? bolt in or weld? removable if I want to return to original...unlikely once it's been welded. Thanks for the pics and any advice...oh yeah, ours is a '61 NSW registered Beetle, stock 1600 tp, standard suspension(not for long :) ) running gear is original. The reason I ask is We would like to hillclimb the old girl as her engine belies her age and there is life left in her yet Thanks, Adam

Update 2 Rear Guards

Adam ,I would contact your local hillclimb club , my car is
bolted in main loops and rest all welded in.(build long time
ago when car was more standard ,so I could take body off
over top. )
Fitted short axles ,so wheels fit under car.
Over week-end made a mounting edge for rear glass guards and will fit quick fasteners when they arrive .Trim
fitting edge off guards and body so to have more tyre clearance but guard is still stock location.
Then had a big clean up of car (3years last time )
Next Job ,change front steering arms to a single long arm,
left to right and a short arm to pitmen arm (more steering
arm clearance from cage work )
Glass front work is done just have to it pick-up !(new look)

Spring plate retainers from Rod Penrose and he got them
from Geers .He does them for standed or sway-a-way retainers .
I weighed my brakes today ( old brakes- 9.2kgs ,new brakes- 4.3kgs =4.9kgs saving weight ) All good for more
ET at track .

Why not keep it yellow, but maybe do a chrome-yellow with no scallops!

Be good to see it back on track!

Colour is driving me nuts ,I do like the old colour (blaze yellow) very much. I think a modern yellow ( toyota gold ) with old school stripe in black of some design ?

I have been working on front steering .Cage Bar to tie
rod arm clearance ,has made me change to anty bumpsteer design in steering . Becouse frame head is
raised 3inch ,I had to notch it .Plus I wanted the shockies
to travel out 50mm so I keep jacking it up and notching
more until I got that.
Chrome-moly rod ends will be used and steering rods maybe alloy or moly tube . Rod ends are 1/2 inch hole by 1/2 unf =$50 each x 4 but are stronge and lite.May have
to space rod end alittle to get it to full travel .Finish next
week.

Spiff dude!

I should have some spacers floating around from when I did my chassis car,
that you can use to stop bind in the heims at full travel.
