dammit I tried to post at vortex but not a member so it was lost.

Shouldnt be any problem pulling the back off so long as it doesnt get turned upside down. There is probably a gasket or o-ring sealing it, so gently lift the cover making sure not to break the seal. If it is broken... no biggy, cut another gasket, buy another o ring.

I was a fitter and turner once upon a time and did plenty of roll grinding(accuracy had to be within 0.0025mm!) The gauges would fill up with coolant, which would dry and make them sticky. I've pulled them apart dozens of times.

Yeah there is nothing to worry about with taking the back off, simple as taking the 3 screws out and it will lift off. you wont upset anything by doing this.
done it dozens of times myself for work.
