Is your type 3 an OZ assembled one or an imported one? The normal OZ assembled one 64-67 was the switch which is in the column bracket and no steering lock. The imported type had the ignition ACROSS the top of the column and incorporated a steering lock. This finished on the 63 models here but did still appear on the 65 1500S and some early 66 Fastbacks. Photo is of LHD but same column/switch. Hope this helps.

Thanks for that pic. Saved me looking! That is the one on all the OZ built ones and there should be plenty of them at bargain basement prices. The one shown in my pic with the steering lock is worth an arm and a leg if you can find one. The last NOS one I saw had an asking price of $250 and that was about 4 years back (except for the NOS one I bought at the Nats for $30 two years back!!) :starhit:.

A clearer pic for those "newbie" Type Three followers who still aren't sure of these different assemblies. Parts are really starting to get rare. Compare with post from Type3lover which is the simpler, non-lockable one which has the column with the Bug style indicator arm.

1500S does that one have a steering lock?
I have never seen that in an early type 3, then again I guess I haven't seen that many!

Yes, it does have the steering lock. This style was in all of those early imported 1963 1500N and up to 1965 1500S. Not sure if they continued with them until around 1968 on the Euro and US models although some photos suggest this. Some early imported 66 Fastbacks were also seen with these columns here in Sydney. All locally produced models from 1964 had the "cheapie" Bug version of indicator arm and the "hang off the side" ignition switch/column bracket.

Near all parts were made in Germany, came here in kits and just assembled here hence the "made in Germany" plate.

Ok, who has pics of both types of indicator arm, because the one I have ready to install looks like it doesn't suit the assembly I have....(we need to start a general type 3 forum!)

Imported style has the combined indicator arm/ignition switch/lock all in one diecast unit. Compare with post from Type3lover where ignition switch is on bracket. The indicator assembly is visable at top of pic as per Bug style except MOST type 3s had the dimmer button in the indicator arm rather than foot operated switch on firewall.

ignition switch


if you are nice and make a reasonable offer, I can help. Are you after just the switch or the column aswell, I have available good used columns without keys( I will get one cut before posting), good used with keys, NOS columns(with two NOS keys each), NOS arms( both brands) and NOS switch assemblies(both brands complete with 2 NOS keys each). Oh, the switches are both locking and non locking(61 model only) for the column you have on your German built 's'.

from what I've learnt from this thread, I think all i need now is the barrel and wiring etc.. But my late notch has that w/keys intact. So could I just use that.... (thanks for the offer Dyno, sounds like you've got a stockpile of type 3 goods)

Noticed this Fastback in another post for sale somewhere in OZ with some of the continuing "1500S" trim including the lockable steering column and armrest in centre of back seat. 8,000 GBP.

Although the fact that it is a fasty lets it down, it is a full import 65 fastback, one of the first...not only this, I spotted the factory red dash, armrests and steering column/wheel (grey/black was standard, red and brown were the options), factory left mirror(not an upside down right side mirror like found on oz cars)centre rear seat folding armrest(only on imports), and steel sliding sunroof!!!. This model also has factory disc brakes and 1600cc and has 4 stud rims, all in 65! It also has the hubcaps seen only on the 1966 euro bugs(1500 only). I wonder who has it?

Although produced in 1965 it is actually the 1966 model which is the norm for all VWs. The model year starts at around August the previous year. !966 was the official year but from Aug/Sept 1965. Also, don't forget that the LEFT mirror was the standard and the right mirror was the slightly odd one made for the rh version. If there was a righthand on the left, then the end user would have put it there. All early Fastbacks had the long armrests on doors. All Fastbacks were 1600.

Europe had all these things and leftover parts no doubt were sent to OZ andused up. First disks here was about 1968.

yes you are right but the imports still had discs, the locally built models had them in 68 , there is nothing odd about the factory mirrors either, VW made a left and right for these cars, just like they made a left and right cats eye mirror for the 61 model, we never saw them here( only on promo vehiches).
