gearboxes

anyone have a surefireway to tell irs box types apart
if it has 113 is it a t3 been told they interchange only the gearselector rod nut ids underneath

what is the diff between 1300 and 1600 g/boxes ie numbers and suitability.

Kombi boxes id for 1600 as they may have an 1800 flywheel!
thanx all

here's what little i know about gearboxes...

well, price wise anyway

To reco one, and take motor etc out and replace is about $1k approx. (at mechanics)

To fit one u already have is about $250

To purchase one privately, with condition unknown is about $100

Known to be good is about $150

Recoed is about $200-300 (depending on whether or not u trust person who does it)

NEW is approx $400

These are things i've heard and been quoted. It kinda depends on who ur talking to, and to an extent whether or not their taking pity on u. In my case, some wonderful avd members did and rescued me from a very big bill.

As for the size etc...no idea how u tell them all apart...

cheers

hmm... interesting. QUOTE:

"113 is the Deluxe Sedan (Export) and can arrive with a 1200, 1300 or 1500 engine."

Sounds like a beetle to me. Deluxe beetle ;), even putting "VW 113" (cause 113 is an actual model number, which starts off EVERY part number), putting it in google images brings up model 113 Deluxe beetles.

So its a bug bit, according to idiots guide.

311 is the TYPE 3 part ID number :D lol

single side plate is the best box to use for building a strong T1 box. has the 3.88 final drive to.

ive noticed that people will ask too much for gearboxes and as a result they dont sell. especially when you hear stories of those down south going to "pick and pay" and getting good boxes for $50 etc....

also whether it be debated or not, i was of the opinion the late swing axle box from a 1300tp was pretty strong neigh the strongest...

yes, Nick but anyone North of Sunny Coast has time and transport /distance costs against them...not only in g/boxes..

we have to factor all that in esp on e-bay bids etc.

Anthony has the id nr of a box or pert nr any indication of the retio in them ?
can post u a pic or 2

I scored two type 3 squareback SSC gearboxes for $50 each, both in excellent condition. Then i went to Volksworld and they had an L bug box covered in mud and crap, condition unknown and they wanted $400 for it, i said thanks but no thanks.

I dicsussed this topic with Leon.
The prices I feel are too high, but are driven there due to
the costs or labour and parts to do a correct rebuild.
Leon said a swingaxle is an 8 hour job to do correctly,
and at 60 to 100 per hour depending on where you live, you get the picture.
Then you have all the bearings and other parts that are worn out in a 30 or 40 year old box.
One of the pinion bearings is over $250 !
The swingaxle box in the clunker that I bought cost the former owner $1100 from Leons
to do a full stock rebuild with new bearings an synchros, and to change in the
crownwheel and pinion ratio.
I have done a couple of boxes for myself and some friends, and I would say there is about 10 hours work in there.
And that doesn't count the time looking for odd parts that need replacing, that you can no longer buy.
Late IRS is a faster job, but always needs the reverse gear replaced and a new pinion nut...more dollars!

Can You tell Me why a new reverse is needed, plus the pinion nut.....
I'm guessing a pinion Nut is a special part.....
Does the pinion nut come loose or just need replacing??

Lee

When You see a gearbox either covered in oil or grease and mud.....
You wonder whether it is any good at all....
but You can't tell... thats the problem....
OK on the 10 hours to do a gearbox.....
Too complicated for Me....
I'd have too many bits left over... lol.....
I keep forgetting that its not 1970 any more......lol...
and gearboxes have done a million miles since then....

Lee...
