30 Pict-2 Carby Tuning Probs

Ok. I am a novous at this aircooled carby stuff, but I have worked on 2stroke Kawasaki KR1s and dabbled on my 851 duke. But tuning this carby just is not happening.
I went to the VW resource as recommended and set the volume needle to 2.5 turns from closed ( I guess that is 5 half turns?) and then tried to set up a reliable idle at 850rpm. I simply couldn't. What am I doing wrong??

By the way the volume needle was set to about 1.25 turns. And yes the engine was wam and the choke fully open. I did not check the timing however. Is that my problem?

as barry said do the carby last.

tappets should be .006 when engine is cold

then points at .016

then timing (depends on your engine.....google it)

then do the carby.

the 30 picts are pretty easy to tune.

carby mite need a rebuild too

Ok. Couldn't means that I could not get the sucker to idle at 850. But that is going off the tacho.
Guess what. I have no vacuum distributor! How does that work?

Tappets scheduled for this weekend. If anyone knows how to let me know what dizzy I've got let me know.
Oh yeah and after driving it again tonights and kepping the rpm above 2000 to stop it stalling, I was on the free way and after about 10 mins at 100kph the thing just decided to die! What the hell is going on?

does the number on your dissy end in 009?

if so it is a bosch 009 mech advance dissy. timing needs to be 7.5btdc static.

make sure the vacumm port on the carby is blocked off (usually with some vacumm hose with a screw in it.

now try again.

A 009 Needs to tuned at Maximum advance with the engine going...
Tune it to about 30-32 degrees..... Maximum advance..
with a timing lamp...
if You don't have a degree pulley then I'll measure the 32 degrees for You....

The tappets must be done first thing... before the engine is started for the day.... must be cold....

Most importantly, the points must be set... .016
before timing the 009 dizzy... as it will affect the timing...

Its not good to drive a VW out of tune....
unless the mixture is very rich, otherwise overheating problems occur....

Lee

009s are crap dizzies and You cannot static adjust them as nearly everyone is different....

Lee and everyone thanks so much for you help.
Ok I have a on the dizzy a sticker that has BREMI 6045 (or 8045) sticker on the cover. Any ideas guys?
And I think I fixed the dieing when at speed issue. The fuel filter was full of the preverbial.I have changed it and am making progress I can almost hold a reasonable idle. I guess I may have sucked crap into the carb. So time for a rebuild too this weekend. As for seting the advance and stuff where do I go from here for my non vac advance dizzy?

look for the part number on the actual metal dissy casing.

to set timing static (and yes less is right but i set my 009 statically at 7.5 which should leave maximum around 30 degrees and it goes alrite, but yeah prolly better to use a strobe lite)

take off dissy cap and rotate engine untill rotor button approaches the little notch in the tim of the dissy. that notch is firing position for #1

now look at the crank pulley. there should be some notches or a notch on the pulley approaching the crack in the crank case.

these are the timing marks.

theres usually 3. when turning the engine clockwise the first mark to pass the crack is 10 degrees BTDC then 7.5 BTDC adn then TDC.

line up the timing mark with the crack in the crank case and then loosen off your dissy.

now connect your static light to the dissy wire side of the coil and the other end to earth and turn ur key to the on position.

turn the dissy til the light just comes on then tighten it up.

turn ur ignition off.

jobs done.

remember to set your points first

Here is the update. TUrn's out that the tank was blocked. Looks like I put in dodgy fuel somewhere in the hills. The elbow outlet was totally blocked. I would drive a while then the crap would get compressed and totally block off the fuel. Over night it would relieve and I would get a little bit of fuel into the float bowl . Enough to let me drive off and get into trouble a few ks from home. anyway, the tanks out and after washing it I could not believe what was in it. Carbies apart but have to play with the kids. Thanks agaon evryone Hopefully I carb will be tunable now
