Lowering a 1965 Dub (Having problems Need Help please)


I have a 1965 Beetle and have had a adjustable front beam installed, which can go pretty low with out the shocks attached
The bump stops have been repositioned so it can go low but when the shocks go back on the car it sits higher again on the shocks being fully compressed.
I know i need smaller shocks but i am having trouble getting hold of them.

I think i need shocks around 200mm fully compressed with eye holes 12mm.

Where would i be able to get a set of these shocks from and i know you can get such an item due to all the low riding beetles out there on the streets.

Any help would be great thanks.

Take the shocks to the shock shop and askem for shorter ones, if memory serves i think mini and subaru have the same fitment but shorter. common problem good luck with the shock people...

Thanks i went into a parts shop and hit them up about the mini shocks which are fully compressed 212mm eye to eye which will do the trick, i was also told those blokes with the lowered beetles run with dropped spindles and dont go that low with the beam?

Is that true?

Getting muffed about it all i ordered the shocks in but they had a 10mm eye size for the Minis not 12mm and they don't come in any other size.

I am just about to go get my old beam put back in and order some lowered spindles.

With those will i have trouble with steering box clearance height and shock probs too or do they work a different way?

With the shocks is it a metal sleeve in a rubber bush, if so could you remove the lot and replace them with those from your VW?

You will not have this prob with dropped spindles as the beam & steering geometry stays factory, the spindle that the drum spins on is 2.5 inches higher up which brings the front of the car down by that amount. Then if you want to go lower you adjust your beam a bit and you can still run std shocks as the lower arm has only come up a small amount. Only thing with drop spindles is they move the wheels outward by about 12mm per side (think maybe more with some spindles - depends) so depending on what wheels you run you may get clearance problems with tyres on the outer lip of the guards, then you will need to narrow your beam.
