Thus, it begins...(A VW Story)

Hello all.

As a new member to the forums and to VW ownership I think I shall post my story thus far here.

22 years ago my parents were in need of their first vehicle. They had just started a family and needed some space. Vehicle of choice - Bay window Kombi.

This is the vehicle I grew up in and I remember many nights coming home from Nana's (45min drive) falling asleep to the rythmic sounds of a type 1 engine.

Skip forward 22 years and I am buying my first car. For the past 6 years I have been riding around on another aircooled machine (CT110 Postie bike), but I have always and still want to get a Beetle.

I met my wife in July 2004 and when I went to visit at her folks home I saw two Beetles in the shed. One had just been restored (New clutch, bodywork, paint job and new interior 63 Bug) and the other faded red chipped paint 74 SB. The 63 had been bought and restored by Laurie (Now sister in Law) and the 74 had been bought for Courtney (Another sister in law).

At first, Courtney seemed disinterested with the 74 and I thought I might be able to get my hands on it. After the restoration she wanted it though (Metalic Pink paint job)

So I went hunting (My wife felt sorry for me because I had wanted a Beetle for a long time, and here a 18 yr old gets one for her birthday).

I ended up with two Beetles that need a heck of a lot of work:

63 Beetle:
Drivers side heater channel needs to be replaced.
Engine is missing alot of parts
King/Link pins need to be replaced (new bushings)
All brake cylenders are frozen (No brake fluid in the resevoir for some years)

57 Oval
Totally covered in surface rust (Although seems there is no serious rust damage like on the 63)
Both rear floor pans are like swiss cheese
36hp engine intack, unknown condition
Semaphores are there.
Rear engine lid is missing

I have started on the 63.
I have bought the bugme video series.
I have removed the body and the king/link pins are in the shop being fixed up.

So, thats where I'm at right now. and this is me introducing my self to the group.

Looks like a lot of work for sure. The oval sounds like a rat candidate though for sure. Welcome to the nuthouse....you'll find plenty of tips here (some you take, some you ignore) and plenty of fun.

Make yourself at home. :thumb
