Painting Tinware
Hey boys n girls..
I'm doing up the 1916 I got from Barls.. His paintwork was a mixture of green and purple.. I want to paint the tinware the same colour as the bug is
going to be..
My question.. Do you need to use a special heat resistant paint or special application?.. Given its going to get hot..

Hi,
I just used Engine enamel [spray can] which is paint made to paint engines with....
My engine did become very hot during the summer, while I wasn't driving it... {I was in hospital for 2 months]
some paint was burnt off over No 3 cylinder...
I took the fan housing off to check there wasn't any thing restricting the flow of air....
there wasn't... I do have the flaps in the fan housing...
I now have the rod connected, and will connect to a new thermostat as soon as I know how to set it...
My engine bay was always very hot in the summer....
Everything was too hot to touch.....
My main problem was the fibreglass rear valance wasn't sealed properly and heat from the muffler was sucked into the engine bay.... its now
sealed...
I have also fitted engine lid stand offs, and the lid is open about 3 inches [75mm] at the top....
I can touch anything in the engine bay now....
I ended up rubbing back My fan shroud and painting it again with engine enamel... same color... red...
My yellow heatriser pipe was also leaking on the front side so I didn't see it... [added to the heat]
Its all welded up, rubbed back to bare metal, and painted with heatproof POR15 silver....
I see many show cars that have the fan housing painted the same colour as the car.... not sure whether they use the same paint...??
The fan housing shouldn't really get that hot if the engine bay is sealed from the exhaust....
and guaranteed to stay cool if standoffs are used....

i used the same paint as i did on the body on the ones in chaos and that was 2 pac

it looks like two pack paint is going to be illegal to sell to the public in the US, shortly.
will probably end up the same here too.
its pretty lethal stuff.
its also tough paint, so should do well on the fan shroud.

I was in Autocheap in Newcastle today and a fellow bought about 30 cans of that cheap export spray paint cans in 3 colours. silver, grey undercoat and
white...
I should have asked Him what He was painting...
Maybe a VW for Valla, but He didn't have any flat black paint.. lol:P
and it doesn't last long in sunlight..

If it is any help with the flaps I welded my mine open where I it looked the most air would get through.
My daughter complains of choke cutting out before engine is warm enough but I would rather that than a cooked engine from a faulty thermostat.

heres another question on this topic, does the motor have to be removed to take off the part of the tin behinde the carby.....i think its the fan
shroud part ??

if u had alot of patience and just absolutly hated taking the engine out it could possibly be done on a doghouse fanshroud by removing the decklid and
the hinge brackets and oil cooler ducting
but the internal oil cooler on single port motors i dont think would allow u to get it off in the car
besides its pisseasy to drop the motor out
when u got twin carbs on its just as easy to drop the motor out to change the spark plugs LOL
i painted my tinware in the same 2pak that the cars painted in and its held finel and its nealry 5 years old
but white tinware is a pain in the arse to keep clean specially in summer with the decklid raised

was used)
