Help. Need to get it going before Valla
OK. So the rebuilt engine is back in the splitty. After a couple of goes she fired up relatively easily. Woohoo. Rev at 2000RPM for 20min, or so
the book says. Anyway, after about 5min, the choke is about 3/4 off and suddenly she stops. Restarts OK, but only runs for 30sec before stopping
again. Have tried it a few times since and same thing every time, starts easily, runs for about 5min, then stops. If you try and rev it, it stops.
Valves were set during rebuild, timing set statically, auto choke working.
It's a 1600DP, 34PICT-3 carb, SVDA dizzy.
I suspect carb problems. Did not touch carb during rebuild except for external clean. Looks very wet when I look down the throat with a mirror.
Any suggestions on what to check to identify culprit.

take the top off the carbie and see if any thing is in the bowl.ie bit of rubber from the fuel line,may have come off when cutting fuel line,and
floats up to the needle and seat.
what were the tappets set too?

Sounds like either too much fuel or not enough...
If an engine won't rev, its the accelerator pump on the carby.. it sprays fuel in every time the throttle is touched.
if this stops working You can't rev the engine...
maybe You can rev it but the car would be undriveable..
When the engine stops, check to see whether there is fuel still in the carby, by pressing the throttle, You will see the fuel being sprayed in by the
accelerator pump jet..
or do You have a see thru fuel filter You can see....
if the needle and seat allow too much fuel into the carby bowl, the fuel will just overflow and drown the engine.
this sort of problem could drive You crazy.... lol

sounds like a fuel issue, as said before about pumping the throttle and watching for fuel after it dies. might have a weak fuel pump not giving enough
pressure to sustain running.

See thru fuel filter, brand new, looks to remain about half full. Took the top off the carb last night. Bottom of bowl had some metallic particles
in it, probably rust left over from before I restored the fuel tank. Anyway, bowl was prety full and when I pulled on the throttle lever fuel
squirted out of the accelerator jet.
The thing that's got me is that she ran before the engine rebuild and I did nothing to the carby. So what's changed?

try changing the coil as it might be failing as it gets hot ,had that on a valiant once

New coil. Changed for used one I had in the garage, no change. I still think it's a carb tuning issue. Reading the carb tuning page from Rob &
Daves website, they say you have to get the idle speed exactly right or stumbling on acceleration will occur
A question for those of you with single 34PICT-3 carbs - what is the high idle speed? Normal idle is meant to be 850-900RPM. She currently high idles
at over 2000RPM, which seems a bit high to me. So if anybody could confirm what their engine idles at when cold, I mean as soon as they start up, it
might help.

sounds like you need to pull the carby off and give it a clean/rebuild, then set it up right.....like on rob and daves site
set buterfly ? opening, then idle and mixture
i have had similar problems and found o rings on mixture and idle screws had disintergrated while in storage
