Wondering... Engine for Cortina


Hey guys,

I know this aint VW but oh well lol.

What engine you guys reckon wud go nice in a 74 TD cortina? Wanting alot of power but able 2 be regestered.

when dad lived in the UK he worked as a mechanic at a place called juff uren motorsport, and they made a prototype of the mark 3 cortina savage, which used the 3L? v6 out of the capri gt i think it was...and on the test run it overtook a ferrari dino at about 140mph.


he did a lot of old racing work as his boss that jeff uren guy or wateva was an ex stock car driver.

it really pains me that i know this..... it wasn't a 3.0 it was a 2.8 out of the MK5 crapi oops i mean capri :P it wasnt a gt they never made one even tho so people called ther capris such... they were all injection but a very easy mod to rip out and put carbs in standard form they had great speed and had the potential to be rockets with mods... there was a mob (lister,amg one of them euro lot) that used to do JPS capri that was a bloody speed demon crap round the twisty stuff but all the capris were.... ... as for engines for the old tinas u cant go past the 2 lt crossflowed pintos,cheap easy fit and bags of reliable power

Get a SR20 nissan motor & gear box would fit easy .

My mate has 140 rwhp out of his n/a motor .My 3GTE turbo only had 150 rwhp
( light car )

Or just go and get a VG30T like I did , 205 KW all day

Now to fit it in the class 5 off roader

I had a TE cortina many years ago, and I put a 4.1 6cyd and gearbox out of a falcon in it and worked it a bit and it went real good and as they came with sixers so it was a bolt in, you just use a new engine.

about 2 years ago i seen this old guy in a blue met cortina blow away 5 bro's in a wrx with heaps of bass. i pulled up a few lights down beside n asked him whats in it,he said an xr8 motor it sounded awsome.

Be careful about how heavy the engine that you put into the Cortina is. Be aware that a straight line rocket with a heavy engine will corner like an elephant with greasy hind feet.

The Essex V4 weighs 150 kilos. the Essex V6 weighs 175 kilos and the Rover alloy V8 weighs 145 kilos. The big Falcon 6 made the Cortinas too front heavy. Think of the Holden 3.8 alloy V6. It can't be too heavy and it will have lots of grunt.

Btw i read on a site that in aus the cortina was bought out with a "Bonnet Buldging" 4.1L Inline 6.

Wud this be what mine is? or the 3L?

I havnt checked lol.

The reason i ask is that a friend of mine has a cortina as well but his has a diff bonnet design but is still a TD.

Good thread this.

The GT 3000 V6 Capri was an Oz only build Capri and it had the old Essex V6 innit. This engine was an evolution of the old Zephyr Zodiac V6 which evolved from the old and hideous V4 often found in Transit Vans of the era.
There was also a few V4 Capris made as well.
The V4 engine was a very grunty, oversquare 60Deg V4 that ran with a built in "miss" due to the firing arrangement of a 60deg V4 and required a dirty great balance shaft geared off the crank to prevent the engine from shaking its way out of the engine bay. Yuk!

The beautiful V6 engine was simply a V4 engine with an extra 2 cylinders added to the back end of the engine.
The evidence of this is the un-machined casting holes still in the front 3 beariing webs of all the V6 blocks for the now non-existent balance shaft.
A 60 Degree V6 is a smooth and "balanced" engine config. They had a beautifully "rolling" zorst howl. So much more sophisticated than the straight six shooters of the time or the 90 degree V6's around and Im sure Baja Wes enjoys the sound from his 60 degree Mazda V6 Baja at full noise.
The bore and stroke are commone to both engines and very oversquare at 93 x 72
The engines are largely bullet proof with 2.5" main bearinghs and 2.3" pins. The conrods are simply awesome and everything in the engines reeks of strength and longevity.
All the engine components apart from the (crank of course) are common to both pommie engines.

What made the V6 such a pain was its sheer weight. The block is a very hefty "Y" block affair and the engine weight came in at about 25Lb heavier than a 302 Windsor V8 hence the popular conversion to the Yankee 60 Degree V8.
Another hassle with the engine was the very restrictive head design which greatly limited the engines performance and pretty shabby valve gear in general.

Cosworth came to the rescue here with a set of aluminium DOHC heads that allowed that beautiful engine to rev to insane RPM and produce over 450Hp reliably on mechanical injection.
These were fitted to the famed "Cologne" Capris' of which only a couple made it to Australia. The best known being Allan Moffats Capri That brute of a car so effectively and severely dealt with anything running in sports sedans of the time in cluding Bob Janes famed 600plus HP HQ sport sedan which was mostly unbeateable in its day.
The other car was dropped and its back broken during shipping.
The sound of this thing howling up Amaroo Park main straight is not easily forgotten! Imagine if this thing was let loose at Bathurst?

The 2.6 and 2.8 engines were the German (Cologn) derivatives of the pommie V6 and altho outwardly similar in appearance, had little in common with the pommie engines as far as common components.
However, altho similarly bulletproof in fundamental design, they were far more sophisticated, especially in the head design and produced good power in their later incarnations.
Again tho, the powerplants were very heavy. Couple this with the massive cast iron bellhousing, big and heavy flywheel/clutch assys and the big and clunky Transit van side loaded gearbox fitted at the time made for an extremely heavy car for its size.
This nose heavy setup compromised steering on all the V6's and they were a pig to drive really fast whereas the 4 cylinder Capris were as sweet as!

There was only ever 3 series of the cars commonly known as a "Mk 1, Mk 2 & Mk 3" The mark 3 being the last one and which had the German engines fitted in V6 form.
They were a very smart and agressive looking car and still look very good on the road today. Rare as rocking horse shit as pretty much all of them were imported into Oz as race cars and they have mysteriously dissappeared and precious few made it onto the road. Sadly, the Mk 1 was the only model brought to Oz and the V6 3000 GT was the only model offered here.

There were a couple of rare "E" versions that made it here which were a more up-market (think Berlina!) version.
South Africa had a version with a small capacity V8 which makes it easy to fit a V8 and be legal with Capris hence the popularity of the conversion.

Now after hijacking the thread,
TD 'tinas came with both 200 and 250 CID non-crossflow six shooters as well as the 2000 and 1600 4 bangers.
Same as the Capri tho, the sheer bulk and weight of the bigger engine severly compromised the handling and they were famouse for their ponderous steering, savage initial understeer followed by wild wheelspinning and oversteer on power!
However, they had loads of grunt and as autos, ran almost for ever, a pretty thirsty setup now tho.

Fitting an Essex V6 to a TD would be a waste of time as the engines are as heavy as the six shooter, dont produce any more power unless you really massage them and are as rare as rockinghorse shit now to find actually sans a car!
You can find 250CID engines at the tip or in the bush if you look around. You could certainly get one for peanuts anywhere!
There is plenty of room under the bonnet and you could fit just about anything from the Jap import scene. The list of choices is endless. If you resist the urge to make it a V8 you could get away with no mods at all and be legal.
What about an RB20det Nissan. Cheap as buggery, plentiful, sophisticated and plenty of grunt for a turbo 2 litre 6 shooter, any of the Jap 3 litre V6's? farrrk where do you start?
As mentioned, the mighty Nissan SR20det turbo 4 banger. Pretty popular now so they are a bit exxie in price.

Anyway, I just love the old capris. I owned 6 of them, both 4 bangers and V6's.
A couple of close mates had them and we all got immense pleasure out of having and modifying them.
I only got rid of mine a couple of years ago!

The TD 250cui had a buldge in the bonnet to accomodate the air cleaner on the carby. I think the 200cui six cyl had the same bonnet. The flatter bonnet would be for the 122cui 4 cyl (2litre engine.).

Check the engine code on the ID plate (G = 200cui, L = 250cui, J = 122cui).
Transmission codes for 6cyl car S = manual 3spd, L = manual 4spd, Z = Auto 3spd, V = manual 4spd (4cyl only).

My old man had one which he traded his hotted up (rust free!!) FB holden for in the early 80's. The cortina got written off 3 times before it finally (and officially) died in 1993. (Got T-boned by a Jag that was out of the showroom for 2 days - Dad had no insurance either and spent the next 6 years paying for it!) The holden didn't fare much better being written off and killing the driver in the process.

Wish he kept the Holden!
