type 3 alternator conversion
Hi volks,
Is there an alternator available to fit a type 3 engine without serious mods needed?
I have read this article but it's only a baby @ 40amps
I have a magna alternator that's 85amps which could be made to fit by grinding away a bit of the old generator perch on the fan housing and
relocating one of the studs that holds the clamp in place. I'd just need a suitable pulley (correct size for spin speed and groove for the V belt)
and have to remove the cooling fan from the front.
For cooling I would put a hole in the bottom of the alternator so it would receive cooling air in the same way that the genny did.
Retaining the generator is no longer an option since I'll have halogen headlamps, EFI, a decent stereo with amplifier and later on I'll need to run
a thermofan for the radiator (water to air intercooler) and scavenge pump. At a guess the maximum demand would be around 60 amps!
I'm looking for ideas please...
Cheers, Toby :thumb
Any auto elec's out there want to swap stuff? I have 2 excellent 12V generators here.

Jack, thanks for posting the link properly. I linked to that article above but it's hard to see unless you mouse over the word "article" in my
original post.
It would be better if there was something with similar width to the generator to avoid hacking things up. I'm going to take measurements and pics
shortly if I decide to use the magna option and can post this for others.
This alternator (like many) has an internal regulator.
Am I right in saying that ALL type 3's had generators? If that is so then there must be a few people keen to do a conversion??
Cheers, T :thumb

Just a brief update on this...
This morning I visited my local wrecker and checked out a few different alternators.
There were a couple that looked suitable. Similar shape to the Nippondenso one in this article : http://www.icbm.org/erkson/ttt/engine/gen2alt.htm.
First one was a 12V 55A from a Hyundai, second one was also 12V 55A made by Mitsubishi and had the correct pulley for a v-belt. Both had internal
cooling fans which really is a better way to go than modifying an external fan model to fit (remove fan and open up a bit of the housing to accept air
like the generator does). They were also smaller than the magna ones I have.
Gonna keep looking...

Did you end up getting anywhere with this? I have been taking a quick look in the wreckers when I am there but so far have not found anything that
looks "right" Perhaps a post in the new Type 3 section could help a few people out or at least get more Type3 people on the job

Hey how u doing?
No progress on the alternator front yet.
I actually put the generator back in for now...the engine isn't running yet though.
I'm still saving for the megasquirt :-) but the conversion is going to happen - it has to. A 30A DC genny isn't going to make the cut on this
project.
Surely others have gone down this road on a type 3. Anyone?
