Rat Rod questions
Hope someone can clear these ones up for me.
1. I have a rusted bug, how do I keep it rat style without letting it rust any further?
2. How does a rusted car pass roadworthy?
3. Is it cheaper to keep your car rat style?
Cheers peoples

1/very hard penetrol or other products from Flood.
2/tough but if it,s only surface and no holes should pass.
3/yes but correct accessories can be exspensive.

lanolin is a exellent waterproofer. Its made from the oil in sheep wool.
Rat style can be cheaper on a old car cause you don't have a expensive bodywork and paint bill.
As for rego, the car still has to be roadworthy.Nothing but surface rust.

Its pretty EZ to sink loads of bucks in to a "rat".... Don't be fooled into thinking its a cheap way to build a cool car..... It can be just as
expensive as a resto or any other build up.....Don't think just because your car is crusty, its a "rat"... Its not.... There are plenty of things
that make a "rat", a "rat"... For starters you need to determine what 'look' your going for, ie: Rat, Rat Rod, Hoodride, HotRod, Street Rod or a
combination. Then you need to figure out the mods like suspension, drivetrain, rolling stock, accessories, preservation..... it starts to add up.

The condition of the paint is actually a big thing for roadworthy in QLD. A mate of mine had his bug knocked back just cos the paint was worn thru to
the primer on the left hand guard.
having said that, I guess it depends on how lenient your roadworthy guy is.

paint should have no bearing on the safty on a auto unless it interfears with the operation of the said car or other road users if that was the case
about half the auto's on aust roads would be defect if it was just a case of bad paint

The issue with paint is an old one.... here in WA the reasons have usually been stated along the lines of " Its a distraction for other motorists....
Remove those flames or get a 'red' defect notice".... A means the car comes off the road NOW and can never be driven or registered again!.... But
at least here, you can get permits for just about any motification, if, and this is BIG IF: 1) you manage to get the right dude at inspection time,
and 2) you find him in a good mood, and 3) you have the bux to pay for those exemptions.....

Everything cost money. Cost me $10 in yoghurt alone. Then comes suspension, Beam, shocks, all that stuff. Running gear from bushes to tyres and
everything in between. Interior stuff, Accesories, roof racks, spats, rims, nuts bolts washers, carpet, glue, globes, fuses, lenses, alternator,
engine bits, exhaust, rubbers, seals, clips, staples, brakes. The list goes on and on and on. If you got a 40 plus year old car and your tring to rego
it as a rat looker, then it better be roadworthy, or youl know all about it.

a rat rod can be cheap if you keep it simple but once you start and want it lower and those accessories and those wheels etc etc it gets expensive all
you are saving is the paint job.

Now seriously, that is rediculous!! There must be better things these morons can do with there time and tax payers money!
Another concideration, we are not the USA etc. Our cars have to follow pretty strict saftey rules. We can't just "find" cars with rusted out floors
etc etc slam em and drive them. They still have to be roadworthy. This is where money comes into it. Genrally, if the car is really really ratty
looking, so are the mechanicals.

Yeah it sucks major chunks, but like I said.... You can get a load of 'exemptions' at licensing time, but you need to ask, and the inspector is not
abliged to comply... I have been told by 3 different informed sources (2 cops I know and 1 inspector), different stories... Guess I wil find out on
the day I attempt to get the Rag rego'ed. I know when they see it they will have a good laugh, but then when they stick the head underneath, all will
become clear..... Its cleaner than a drycleaned tuxedo under there... All POR15, SS fasteners, SS brakelines, new rubber, and upspec'ed running
gear... And not a sign of rust anywhere.... You gotta make it hard for the bugger to knock you back at rego.... Make it pass the 'roadworthy' with
flying colours and you on the road to good times....
