Neil,

I use a stock 2L Sachs clutch plate. It has been really good. At first I had a no brand clutch from one of the cheaper VW shops. The Sachs cost nealy 3 times as much, but hasn't exploded like the cheap one did.

The cheap one is on the left. It survived nearly 6 months but died on it's first beach outing. It always felt cheap and had an incurable shudder problem.

The one on the right is the sachs. Been going 3 years with no problems. Much smoother than the cheap brand. Being an offroader I steered away from puck clutches as I wanted to have good control.

I use the standard Mazda V6 pressure plate. I had it measured by a clutch shop and I think it was about 1700lb.

I back wes on that. German clutches are very good. I've filled mine up with sand to the point where it was slipping and very unhappy. Dusted it out and gave it a clean and it works good as new. That's tough as far as I'm concerned. :tu:

I will hold comment for 3 days.. I am sure that my 215.. clutch is german, and i have had it slipping for 3 weeks...since the dyno. Because of the Splitty conversion, the hoist is occupied and as soon as it's finished, the beetle will be ripped apart for a week while I start tackling a reasonable list of changes/improvements, that have come from dailydriving 500 km a week since I finished it.It might be fluid on the thing, although smells pretty bad and slips then sort of catches itself..eventually.

Me thinks hotspots on the disc. I have slowly got more and more power from little changes and its pretty much at its best at present.. low boost and a slipping clutch made 150kw at the wheels..with my first pressure plate there was 50 kw difference from the slipping clutch to the dyno figure.2 different dyno tuners say it should be 200kw at the wheels.

I am looking at new discs now, however the 200mm has heaps more options than the kombi one. Flick through vw trends and see what is advertised.

A bigger diameter will transmit more torque for the same pressure plate pressure. That's why I went with the 228mm 2L clutch.

If I had a EJ20T street car I would get a custom 228mm clutch plate made. A place up here does organic lining on one side and ceramic pucks on the other side of the plate. Apparently it is the best of both worlds.

I have a Kennedy 2100lb with a standard german clutch plate (200mm) with my EJ20T Kombi conversion. I went for the 200mm due to the options available off the shelf. Time will tell how relaible the plate is.

This is why I made the fly wheels in 200mm as there is a good selection of plates about .You guys as there with running cars so its best to get feed back .

+ I know Matt would cain his ride as hard as I would mine .

I am flying in on the 21/8 Matt for a full week & would like to have a beer or two .

there is a place in perth called Idlewild Off Road that has 200mm Kennedy stage 1, 2 and 3 in stock along with puck clutchs. would be a lot cheaper then getting them from the US.

Where are you staying???

Definetely hook up. We have a big fridge at the shed. Just got a streets icecream freezer for summer. All i need to put in now is the firemans pole.

The splitty has a seagull 200mm with a kennedy stage 3 that was rebuilt here and has about 850kg clamp force. Soo close to running, cannot wait to show you guys the pics.

Wes, I didnt think you could fit a 228 in the beetle bell housing...you are probably talking 2 litre box anyway hey.

It is as close as 10 minutes at the right time of day..I did dural to the Shell space station on epping rd at lane cove in 14 minutes last night...clutch was makiing some odd noises at the top of its slip.. Still wasted a stock wrx, although that isnt saying much these days. I had a new bmw 4.4 X5 last week for work and hosed off a clubsport on the hill into dural...was sort of more fun than winning in the bug! Cost $40 a day in petrol...that was not fun!

i need to talk clutches to
in my manx with the ej20t it only used to slip on bitchumen as it came on boost in 3rd gear
on dirt in 3rd it would wheelspin on boost
now(a couple of months latter) it is slipping on boost in 2nd on the road and i think it is starting to slip on dirt in 2nd as well
it does not slip around town unless you hit boost
i have a 2lt box with a 200mm bellhousing and clutch
i need to stay 200mm to keep my adaptor kit
i put a new RPM clutch kit in (20% stronger than standard) that was from a 1600 kombi box
what do i need to stop it slipping?
what are 3 or 5 puck like on the street

Hi

In my WBX I 1st ran a stock 210, then a stock 215, then 228 which can be fitted into a Type 1 trans, but you really need to grind a lot of the bell housing away to fit it in, then I had a specialy made 215 by Race Clutch in Qld, years ago it cost me about $600 to have it made up and if it needed any work needed to be done to repair it I had to send it off to Qld and wait for it to come back.

I have a 200mm Stage 4 from V Force for the next car, I hope it will be OK

I was talking clutches with someone the other day...can't remember who now....that's right, it was David777 and he was saying you can get a friction plate that is 5 pucks on one side and standardish material on the other. Apparently it's the best of both worlds. I can't tell you what a puck clutch is from my experience, but I have a mate with a 1600 rally car and he has one. He says it works really well to race with. But you can't slip it at all. He has to be really careful putting the car on the trailer coz once you burn it even a little bit, it stuffed. So I don't know how you'd go in traffic.
