Whats the Difference with type 3 gearboxes?
Whats the difference with type 3 gearboxes?
Will it bolt straight into a Beetle?
early type 3 Swing Axle to Beetle swing axle chassis?
or
Late type 3 IRS gearbox to IRS beetle chassis?
and
Are type 3 final drive Ratios different to a Beetle?
I would think they would be..
as the body would be much heavier than a beetle..
I can't remember anyone saying they had a type 3 gearbox in their beetle...
Just wondering why ?

i think its the diff ratio. 4.125

Ratios are the same the dimple for the gearshift rod is on the boottom of the shaft instead on the top and teh later ones have the bananna mount
holes filled with an alloy plug

Don't they use the Beetle type of transaxle Mounts?
[also called engine or gearbox mounts]
Can't if the holes are blocked up....
I presume...
Must be a reason why they are not used....
as a lot of type 3s have ended up at the wreckers...
No physical differences... too Big a box to fit etc..?

They will all bolt into a Beetle pan.Just knock the alloy plugs out and bolt up the Beetle mounts.Type 3's had a 4.125 final drive and the early
Beetles were 4.375,which made a good conversion when you fitted a bigger motor.You also got the wider rear track and bigger rear brakes with the swing
axle conversion.I have fitted all the late rear suspension and single side plate trans into a Beetle IRS pan.

one of my bugs has a sqaureback irs arse end
the gearbox code is DC if that means anything
heres the road test report from my type 3 manual
with a 4.125 diff 77mph in third?? wtf :o
the same ratios as 1500 and sbug and they dont do that
even my L with 3.88 is flat out pulling 70mph in third with the same engine specs too

for performance the L bug box would be better with 3.88 diff ratio. CB performace also sell a 3.88 Ring and Pinion set.

| ---Yes Lee-all are the same,although I don't remember how much wider the rear IRS track is.I tossed the rear Type3 brakes and
fitted discs straight away.Probably the same as the swing axle difference.The difference between both is all outboard of the axle bearing.The swings
had longer axles to suit the wider brakes,and from memory,the IRS Beetles had a wider snout on the smaller brake drum.The Type 1 IRS rear drums were a
solid item while Type 3's had the drum which was separate to the drive flange.As already stated-the gear shift rod had the dimple on the
bottom,because it could not be accessed under the rear seat like a Beetle.
