I thought mine was safe, I guess it isn't, only 2 reasons I can see is that it would be relatively very easy to steal if you wanted transport to
somewhere, &/ or they wanted the stereo, beautiful car, hope it turns up in one piece
Please, I need drivers side window regulator (winder mechanism) for my '54

Its either been stripped or resprayed...
Its probably the only early Beetle with that colour scheme
Very Noticeable...
Just how easy is it to steal a beetle?
I guess with the early ones, the back of the ignition switch was under the bonnet.. so fairly easy..
What about the later models with switch next to steering column?
anyone use one of those Hella switches with the large plastic or metal key which disconnects the battery?
I put one in My Sons beetle...
they would be a pain with a Radio/clocks memory...

most old 6v style ignition switches are that worn u can start them with a screwdriver
i shocked a car sales man one day by unlocking and starting up a 62 bug with the key from my 74 LOL
any pre 71 bug is a piece of piss to steal
steering locks on 72 on make it harder ther're fairly solid
alarms with immobilisers are cheap as these days and are fairly effective too
not many theives would bother popping a vw hood to shut up a screaming siren just to steal an old vw
specially when VN dunnydoors are just as easy to pinch

The last Beetles made in Mexico had a key switch on the panel on the opposite side that the fuel flap was on.
and the alarm was a standard VW horn located in the engine department...
I guess thats what they were both there for..
I used to use key switches on cars [including VWs] and had the siren/alarm horn under the front of the car..
My idea this time was to have the alarm siren 115db located under My Beetle's drivers seat, so it would be too loud to get into the car...
BUT
I'm worried that one day it may go off by itself...
while I'm driving.... at 100kmh.... YIKES,,,
I also have a similar alarm that gives You 10 seconds to turn the ignition on, after you have opened the door..
and 30 seconds after you shut the door...
I guess thats why You don't see alarm horn speakers inside cars....:P:P
so I guess the horn speaker will be under the fuel tank...
so, if it goes off while I'm driving, I won't be deaf after 5 seconds....:P:P:thumb:thumb

sorry to get off track a bit..
I hope they find the car in a repairable state...
although it couldn't have been driven far...
as it was very identifiable, colourwise...
Why would someone steal something like that??
You couldn't risk selling it.... without changing the colour..
unless they just wanted the stereo system etc...
Maybe We should be like MR Bean and take the steering wheel with Us.....
Its hard to imagine, a VW enthusiast would have taken it!!
