Fraud dept rang Me yesterday!! YIKES!

Some one has been using My Mastercard to withdrawn cash from Western Union....

I don't know how they picked it up..

they rang to find out if I had been taking cash out of Western union..

My Answer was No....
I still have My Own and My Wife's cards still here...

I have yet to receive all the paper work which no doubt I will have to fill out, to get reimbursed by the Credit Card people...

We haven't been using this card lately...

so , I have no idea how the cards or the account was compromised...

so, My cards have been cancelled, and I will be issued with new cards & new account number etc..

Only thing I don't have to do, is change My name:P:P

[well I hope not- I'm sorta used to this name...lol]

Most card fraud is done at the point of sale, meaning the card is scanned when inserted into the machine. Online fraud is common and dangerous if you dont have the right stuff on your home computer. Hope it all turns out good.

Hi Sharon,
My Son was living in Wollongong years ago, and He moved flats a few times, and someone must have picked up some of his mail, they opened a mobile phone account in His name with Telstra, and rang up a $1000 bill...
Meanwhile, My Son was working with Optus, and had an OPTUS mobile phone with unlimited calls etc...
He didn't pay the bill, but about 5 years later He went to start an Internet Service Provider in the Country and had to use Telstras lines.... They wouldn't do anything until He Paid the $1000.... so he had to...

I just hope I have no problems getting the money taken off My credit card account....
At least, the Credit Card company contacted Me...
so, I should be OK....

I never think to look at My bank accounts on the internet, only when I get a statement in the mail...
Many checkout operators have said to Me,
"You sign your name exactly as on Your card"
but isn't everyone supposed to sign the same as on the card??
thats what its on there for...

I did have My Son [ISP owner] check My computer today and My anti virus software etc is all up to date...
He couldn't find any problems with security...

basically, all the questions I had to answer to prove who i was , when asked by the credit card Fraud people, could have been found in My mail.. very easily..
Date of birth - address - phone number - name -
numbers off My credit card -
I couldn't remember last time I used it...

Maybe they should have asked My mother and fathers date of birth... now that wouldn't be easy to find...?
or the chassis & engine number of My beetle??
but all these things can probably be found by a smarter person than Me on the internet...?

My dogs birthday.... Now that would be a good one...
unless You have access to the Vets files....??

I give up.... is anything private ?? :o:o

I've somehow had a EBay scammer take $2 out of my account (the bank rang me to ask) and I had a dodgy taxi company rack up more than $100 on my credit card - both were iinvestigated

Lee, I would ring your bank and ask them if it was them who called you.

As the all the details you used to confirm who you were..... might now be being used for whos knows what.

DITTO !!! Your bank already knows the details of your card etc...why would they ask you??? I would be VERY suspicious and ring the bank...YESTERDAY.I've had the "bank" call me at home and ask me the same.I've told them to *uck off....and hung up. It wasn't the "bank" calling.

Boy, sounds like a lot of scammers out there...

I had to ring them back on the number on the credit card...
so, I had no reason to doubt them,
then again, if they had rang back...
or given Me another number...
I would still have given them all that info....:o:o

I always think that people are nice and friendly....
and law abiding....

Maybe I have to change My outlook....

I do get calls everyday asking for Myself or My wife by name...
every day... Yesterday:
One for My wife [I said She wasn't home]
One for Me [ She said I wasn't home]
also a person who wanted to know if I was a home owner
and was working full time?
I always say No to any questions like that..
Does My roof need renewing?

luckily My phones have the phone number readout and all the ones i hang up on are always "PRIVATE"
so no number comes up...
but My Wife is a nurse and if She rings from the Hospital
Private also comes up...
so, usually I just listen to the back ground noise....
which doesn't actually help unless I hear My Wife's voice...

My phone number must be on everyone's list of phone sellers or people wanting donations etc...
I did see on TV that they [Goverment] are working on a list program, so if You put Your phone number on the list - These companies will not be able to phone You -
to harrass You into buying something...
I'll be first on the list... if it does get started or can work..

Lee

Hehe... Mum kept ringing me the other day, so I interupted her with "can you please put me on your do not call list" and that was the last call I got that day. So, it appears to work...

I stand corrected. The actual register won't be operational until early 2007. There is this one though: http://www.adma.com.au/asp/index.asp?pgid=1999

May be of some help.

Hi lee
its a shame your son had to pay for a debt that wasn,t his!!! , I only got telstra to believe me after I reported the person to the police as she was using my drivers licence and i also went to the local court house and got a statutory declaration statement signed and witnessed by a JP stating the bill wasn,t mine , and faxed to the fraud department at telstra it took a while to sort out but I wasn,t paying someone elses bill !!!

There can be some horrible and inconsiderate people out their , but luckily their are more good than bad
best of luck with your credit card company
cheers Sharon

Thanks Sharon,
I hope its just an open and shut case...
and I won't be paying it...

I told My Son not to pay the Telstra bill
and to take it further...
but He didn't do anything...
I think He thought while ever He didn't need a telephone account in His name with Telstra
He wouldn't have to pay it....

Well, He didn't pay it until he had to use Telstra....
but He should have tried harder...
as I'm like You, I don;'t want to pay someone elses bills..
We have enough of our own to pay
cheers

A friend of my sons had just sold a house and had put the difference in the NAB.

Some offshore dude was taking out the max daily amount and putting it in an Aus account before transferring it OS. They got $30000 before he realised what was going on. Luckily they got it back, but not before he had to prove he wasn't the scammer.

The NAB froze all his accounts until they proved it. He lived on a visa from another bank until it was sorted.

It all happened because there was a program that monitored his keyboard when he did internet banking.

If you do internet banking make sure your bank has a virtual key pad (uses mouse to click numbers).

I have used my husbands credit card (accidently, as I didn't realise that I had wipped out his card and not mine) and signed my own name and it hasn't been picked up. Firstly, our signatures are no where similar, I am all loopy and twirly and his all uptight and narrow, and secondly I so don't look like a MR !!!! ..... It is pretty scary that in this day and age our identity is not secure ......

Funnily enough Stanley,
the only bank I use on the internet that uses the virtual keyboard was the one that the fraudsters used...

although I frequent another bank on the internet
I don't normally use the virtual keyboard one ,
as i don't do a lot with that card, but I checked it today and I didn't really like the virtual keyboard...

but Maybe i'll have to get used to it if its secure....
as no doubt the other banks will follow...

I'd be sus. The privacy act would prevent the Fraud Squad being able to access your bank information without a warrent I believe. The bank would not hand over the information. If the FS contacted the bank, then in the first instance the bank should call you, and confirm your details and transactions. They spend a lot of money and time on this.

If the bank is suspicious they would call you, and if both thought it sus, then they would inform the FS to investigate. You would need that to be in a position to get yer money back.

If it is the FS, then there should be a case number at least. I would not give them JACK unliess you are face to face with the investigating officer.

Can't see why Western Union would pick it up, unless you pointed it out to your bank. If it is part of a wider investigation, then you may be a victim in a line of them. If your ID is stolen, then they may have done the transaction, in which case, you would know as your statment would record it, you report it, then the bank gets onto it and FS get involved if it warrents it. Banks are insured against this, so if its not telephone numbers, you'd just get paid out and the bank would claim for it using the FS crime number with who ever un writes it.

Most fraud like this happens at ATMs, bin-raiders and telesales or over the counter click clack transactions, not the internet. More people are ripped off by which bank in one day through ATMS giving you the wrong notes, like giving you $100 when you wanted $160.00...than Aussies loose over the internet on all transactions in a month ...

The internet, when you use SSL and reputable e-com gateways, is much safer than being in a shop, and defo handing out your card no on the phone. It's easy to track people's person info down online....

Might be talking out my arse, but I'd check the crime number, the FS officers credentials and talk to your bank personally. It sounds sus to me.

Hi,
The Fraud Squad didn't really ask Me any for any information, just if I had withdrawn cash from western union the day before or a phone withdrawal 10 minutes ago... and Yes I was given a case number.
I had to ring back to the number on the back of the card
and quote My case number...
thats when they wanted all My info to make sure it was Me.....
the first withdrawal was a western union one and the 2nd a cash withdrawal over the phone....
so, to do that, that must have had all My details...
