why is it so with type one wheels?

here's stupid question of the day.

Why is it, that whenever i see widened wide 5 stud wheels for a type 1, they're always 14" ones, and not 15" ones (as per the usual narrow rims you find on bugs)?

is it some thing to do with load ratings/stress?

or is it just my imagination?

dont you just get sick of that LOL
dont worry its the same for 4 stud as well

all i can put it down to is most cars upto early to mid 90s were 14"
most wide vw wheels were just vw centers fitted to mainstream car rims
14" tyres are also cheaper than 15"

Cause they were big in the eighties. So were 14 inch tyres. you dont want widies on your beast anyway. Do you?

and nah, i was just thinking about them and wondered why they were all 14s when 15s were standard. it was just weird!

Yes
I think what was just said is correct...
firstly, 14 inch wide tyres were less expensive and easy to find...
secondly, with 14 inch tyres You lower the rear drive ratio
so you can accelerate faster...
but highest speed is lowered...

I have a set of 14 inch chromed rims which I didn't use...

I don't like them...
I'd rather have 16 inch than 14 inch..

Nothing wrong with wide wheels/tyres as long as they're on the back!!
I'm doing some at the moment, 15x6.5's. Just need to mock up when the ride height is set, to get the offset right, then get em welded up by the pro's. The goal is to stuff 215x65's up back with the 135's up front

Maybe 14's are a consequence of having to cut the centres out of them out of 15's?

Hi

In the old days 15 inch tyres had huge sidewall profiles, so bugs would have looked like a praying mantice with them on and been over geared as well, and as already mentioned most popular cars had 13 or 14 inch wheels.

I remember thinking I was pretty cool when I fitted some 205x70x14 series tyres to my car, looking at my Falken catalogue they were about 647 mm high, close to stock height.

nice score jo-tas! ive got 14" widies on my lil wagon, tyres are certainly easy enough to get, most generic jap imports of the 90s ran 175/75 14s which suit the front perfectly and the 195s are easy enough to come by for the rear as well
