Type 3 EFI
I run a 1970 VW T3 Fastback with the Bosch D-jetronic fuel injection (VW TLE model). As you probably know, these systems are getting rather difficult
to get parts for - and not many people are around who can work on them.
My TLE is fully restored (1640cc motor) - so I would like to keep it going. I am having fuel injection trouble at the moment - and I suspect the ECU
(on-board management system - it's not really a computer - more of an electrical box of tricks - a logic controller).
So I would welcome finding out about any source of reconditioned ECUs? (This could be a short-term solution).
And maybe anyone who could rebuild or supply reconditioned MAP (pressure) sensors?
But I think in the long term I need to go down the path of replacing the old Bosch system with something more contemporary and reliable (with a
back-up of spare parts).
I have heard about Haltech systems. But I haven't found anyone who has actually installed a Haltech to a T3.
Has anyone done this? Or is there anyone that knows about these things?
I really need to work out how to swap my Bosch D-jetronic for a new processor controlled injection system. I'm not too keen on carbies - that's my
last resort if I have to go there. |

Regardless of what type of ECU you buy...make sure you get a flying loom so you can plug everything together yourself.Dyno time will be an expense a
lot of people forget about. Perhaps buy a couple of second hand Bosch ECU's while they are still around, although they employ dinosaur technology to
whats available these days. If it were me i would get a new ECU and do the job properly the first time. Haltech are good as are most/all Aussie
ECU's. I wouldn't reccomend one over another...i do recall a type 3 for sale here as parts some time ago...think it had a Haltech installed?? Good
luck!!

$100 says it won't be the ECU!! It will most likely be a wiring problem (corosion) or a maintenance item like a TPS or vacuum sensor or line, spark
plug, points, etc etc

I am with VWCool, I doubt it will be the ECU, but if it is, I have heard that there is someone here in Perth who rebuilds them. As they are all
componentised, it is quite easy to replace individual caps, resistors, etc.
First place I would be checking is all the connectors, and also the 'contact points' in the bottom of the dizzy. If these are not working properly
she wont go for sure.
I hear the diaphragms in the MAP sensor are also prone to failure.
I am currently looking at installing a Delco/Kalmaker or Megasquirt hybrid system on our type 3. Look at the threads on these topics.
Search for Rattys 63 EFI projects for further info.

I would be very interested in T3 D-Jettronic parts. Let me know what you have.
Thanks, Len. |

I have installed another ECU and this is an improvement on my old (original unit) - but things still aren't 100% correct. I'm now about to try
another MAP sensor to see what this does.
My ECU is the original from the car - I would be very interested in leanring of anyone who can test and repair these components.

Hi to all - and thanks for the input.
Yes D-Jetronic parts are of interest to me - and the name of anyone who can test and repair the ECUs.
I have checked the wiring, trigger points, dissy, etc etc. I have a new set of trigger points installed on the dissy. (Cost $200 from Porsche Aust!).
I think the problem is the ECU, MAP sensor or one of the other data collectors on the engine.
A replacement ECU I have tried is an improvement over my (original) old ECU and I now have a 2nd hand MAP sensor to install to see what that does.
Obviously I would like to get my hands on a new ECU and MAP sensor - or at least rebuilt units that have a know history and are proven quantities.
But these things are thin on the ground.
I still am interested in the Haltech route - but I don't want to spend $3.5-4K and be the first bunny to find out it doesn't work as good as the old
D-Jetronic.
Please excuse my rough replies and workings on this forum - it's all new to me - so I may not be too smart in the way I post replies etc etc.
Finally - if anyone needs a new set of trigger points (at less than $200 that Porsche want) - I have another set.

I doubt the ECU conversion would cost anywhere near that much. The last complete rewire and instal including dyno time that i paid for cost
$1700...push in and drive out.To do it yourself is easy with a flying loom,so you are paying less as the instal can be done by you if you have some
spare time. All wires are labeled so you just run the ones you need to where they go....tow it to the dyno and thats about it. I bought a LINK ECU for
my 1916..went well.....good luck!!
