ouch thats nuts
What makes me a little cranky though, is that the 9/11 anniversary in the US is getting more appeal and TV footage than the anniversaries of OUR OWN
Bali bombing. We lost footy teams and everything. I mean, i'm not saying 9/11 is important, we did loose aussies in there to, and it was a bad event,
but to get more attention then our own local problems just shows how americanised and screwed our 'once' aussie media is.
Anyone else disagree with the idea to build over ground zero rather than have a memorial? Pity its what the US is planning Spose in their eyes, a 50 story tower gets more money for them then a mural
would. What more would the government need for motivation then the buk.

All to do with alliances in the fiasco they call the War on Terror!
Is this where we start down the lines of Johnny H being an American puppet? and TV footage is to show solidarity? Or do people genuinely still care?

Chris...they recontructed the first time the damn thing was bombed..why shouldnt they now?
Now, obviously they prolly did so under the shroud of 'making it safe again...and there were very few fatalities (isnt one death one too many?) but
maybe they figure having it as a memorial, indirectly commemorates what the terrorists acheived.
I would hate to be in their position...u'll be damned if u do...and damned if u dont...
BUilding up...ppl go on...but ur a bastard. place a memorial....ppl contineu to flock decades later 'to what once was' and terrorists continue to
be remembered for the horror...so again...ur a bastard.
one that incorporates two things...the building and a memorial....prolly as good as it can get...
it shows...hopefully...terrorists can cause damage, but ppl will rebuild...and will go on...and will find a 'new normal' which is all one can hope
for when they lose a person close to them
dubless.

as an aside i was in the Autostadt in wolfsburg when it happened...
about the time the 2nd anniversery (i wish i could spell) came around i heard that the US had killed more civilians in afghanistan than were killed in
9/11. funny isn't it(especially as that was 3 years ago and only one of the countries they have invaded since 9/11).
just who is the biggest terrorist threat in the world at the moment?
the US (the UK and we ourselves) wonder why people want to attack us?
what was that 60's saying, fighting for peace is like f#*king for virginity?
oh pardon me, am i letting my dirty hippie/pacifist/anti US foreign policy side show... oops.

if u can imagine the size of the real estate the towers and surrounding buildings stood on maybe u will realise it would be ridiculous to dedicate the
whole area to a memorial.

Sam, I was there in the US too! I go to NY quite often with work, and I had planned to meet a friend at the Windows of the World Bar at the top of
WTC1 on the Saturday night. I have been there many times, as it was cheaper to buy a beer in there than pay the tourist fee at the viewing platform on
WTC2.

Sam that's nuts. I'm glad your timing was off so that you're with us now.
Chris I'm pretty sure Australian TV covered the anniversaries of the Bali bombings pretty well with all day live coverage and numerous grabs and
specials about particular survivors.

I think we covered bali and port arthur anniversaries just as well as 9/11.
I wonder what they did in NY for all the office space that was lost. My company is spread out over 5 floors of 3 buildings and struggling for space
because affordable office space is so hard to come by. I wonder how many desks were in those buildings and wonder where they are now.

Could this be true?
Apparently this is an article from the Evening Standard in London that seems to be fairly interesting…
Fury as academics claim 9/11 was 'inside job' - 05.09.06
The 9/11 terrorist attack on America which left almost 3,000 people dead was an "inside job", according to a group of leading academics.
Around 75 top professors and leading scientists believe the attacks were puppeteered by war mongers in the White House to justify the invasion and the
occupation of oil-rich Arab countries.
The claims have caused outrage and anger in the US which marks the fifth anniversary of the terrorist attacks on Monday.
But leading scientists say the facts of their investigations cannot be ignored and say they have evidence that points to one of the biggest
conspiracies ever perpetrated.
Professor Steven Jones, who lectures in physics at the Brigham Young University in Utah, says the official version of events is the biggest and most
evil cover up in history.
He has joined the 9/11 Scholars for Truth whose membership includes up to 75 leading scientists and experts from universities across the US.
Prof Jones said: "We don't believe that 19 hijackers and a few others in a cave in Afghanistan pulled this off acting alone. "We challenge this
official conspiracy theory and, by God, we're going to get to the bottom of this."
In essays and journals, the scientists are giving credence to many of the conspiracy theories that have circulated on the internet in the past five
years.
They believe a group of US neo-conservatives called the Project for a New American Century, set on US world dominance, orchestrated the 9/11 attacks
as an excuse to hit Iraq, Afghanistan and later Iran.
The group says scientific evidence over the attacks on the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon is conclusive proof.
Professor Jones said it was impossible for the twin towers to have collapsed in the way they did from the collision of two aeroplanes.
He maintains jet fuel does not burn at temperatures high enough to melt steel beams and claims horizontal puffs of smoke seen during the collapse of
the towers are indicative of controlled explosions used to bring down the towers.
The group also maintains World Trade Centre 7 - a neighbouring building which caught fire and collapsed later in the day - was only partially damaged
but had to be destroyed because it housed a clandestine CIA station.
Professor James Fetzer, 65, a retired philosopher of science at the University of Minnesota, said: "The evidence is so overwhelming, but most
Americans don't have time to take a look at this.";
The 9/11 Commission dismissed the numerous conspiracy theories after its exhaustive investigation into the terror attacks.
Subsequent examinations of the towers' structure have sought to prove they were significantly weakened by the impact which tore off fire retardant
materials and led the steel beams bending under heat and then collapsing.
Christopher Pyle, professor of constitutional law at Mt Holyoake College in Massachusetts, has dismissed the academic group.
He said: "To plant bombs in three buildings with enough bomb materials and wiring? It's too huge a project and would require far too many people to
keep it a secret afterwards.
"After every major crisis, like the assassinations of JFK or Martin Luther King, we've had conspiracy theorists who come up with plausible scenarios
for gullible people. It's a waste of time."
But University of Wisconsin assistant professor, Kevin Barrett, said experts are unwilling to believe theories which don't fit into their belief
systems.
He said: "People will disregard evidence it if causes their faith to be shattered. I think we were all shocked. And then, when the voice of authority
told us what happened, we just believed it."
As the fifth anniversary approached, the 9/11 Scholars for Truth is urging Congress to reopen the investigation claiming they have amassed a wealth of
scientific evidence to prove their version of the terror attacks.

i was watching CNN the other night and there was an interview with a professor who said that the speed in which the buildings collapsed, something
like 14 seconds maybe, was faster than the rate an object falls, so this proves that there was some sort of explosion inside that dropped both towers,
not just the weakening of the structture from the heat. whether its true or not, wen u watch how they dropped, its almost too clean if u know wat i
mean, they just cave in on themselves.

Okies, a topic that I have read up on.
The towers were leased by Westfields (The shopping centre peopel with Frank Lowry) - they had the retail space.
The first attack in 1993 (not the fire in 1975?) was down in the basement carpark near the gold vault and was not significant enough to cause major
damage.
The rate of collapse is consistent with all the models that have been done since (on computers though). If the building did not have any structural
strength left on any floors the rate of collapse should have been about 8 seconds not as long as it took. The reason for collpase is generally taken
as a result of buckling failures of the steel members. The failure of the steel was due to a loss of strength resulting from the temperature of the
fire, and loss of structural integrity. Basically when the steel heated it 'got weaker', bent and then was not strong enough to hold the weight of
the floors above. As the floors above collapsed the floors where the fire was, the momentum and weight was too great for the next floors down and so
the domino collapse that was seen resulted.
Basically the heat did what is normally done with explosives for a controlled drop. You take out structural support and get the building to 'drop'
on itself.
There were a few fuel tanks for generators within the buildings, but not enough to cause the buildings to collapse, that was done by the larger fires
from the planes.
Knew the study, courses and lectures would eventually pay out!

" greatest capatalistic nations in the world."??????? No such word as 'capatalistic"...try capitalist.
I'm assuming you've been to Iraq post the US invasion? I can guarantee you haven't.
Things can't fall faster than gravity unless they are shot downwards, but once their initial kinetic energy abates they will slow to 9.8m/s/s (i.e
gravity). The 'professor' should hand back his degree.
.......and what Penguin says!
Can't believe the BS conspiracy theories that abound. People need to get out from behind a computer screen and experience the real world
If they are called apartments, why are they so close together ?
