I think it would be best to keep both. Neither the VW or Harley will depreciate in value and they are just as much fun in their own different way. It all comes down to storage space. If the Harley won't fit in the garage then park it in the lounge room.:thumb

Yeah good one Pete?:o You would probably get sick of the Kombi engine and want to fit a Suby in it later as well!

Nah it would make for an easy aircooled conversion.

The father-inlaw told me of an aquantance in the 70's who put a VW 1200 engine in his BMW bike. It was a pretty awesome bike, but he was getting his legs burnt and it would not corner very well at all.

Suby engines are only for cars. I suggested at work that an Austin Healey would go really good with a WRX turbo motor in it and the guy I said it to looked at me like I had just said something about his wife. Disgusted but also angry look it was.

We just got a Nash-Healy in for restoration, and my suggestion was to fit a 265 Hemi with triples (E38 Charger). Again was met with disgust.

Healey owners are a bit up-tight about all things not British! You should suggest they fit a VW engine so they get some good ol' German reliability and engineering. I'll bet that would go down like a German U-Boat! The problem with pommie cars is they spend so many man hours getting the wood grain dash to look 'just right' and forget how to fit an electrical cable. Must be nearly time for a cuppa!:tu:

They love they Lucas stuff don't they? Goes well behind the woodgrain dash when the smoke starts.

At work they 'modify' them with Bosch starter, alternator and distributor. Koni shocks and Yokahama tyres too for the brave. That seems as far as a lot of them are willing to go.

Julie-Anne, don't sell it. You know you're gonna kick yourself if you do...SO DON'T SELL IT. Harley davidsons look (the emphasis on LOOK) great in warm, dry weather, but the instant cold or wet or you need to carry something or someone (more than one person) any distance they are uncomfortable and impractical at worst. Besides, finding another splitty in good nic will be a nightmare if you ever want one again. Only sell it if you never want a splitty ever again, and I get the impression that's not the case.

I personally think you should sell your man for having the nerve to buy such a overpriced, horrible motorbike!!! :P

nasty filthy english car loving....makes me feel sick just thinking about those sort of people.:o

Pete, I am totally with you on this. All british sports cars should have electrical/engine conversions to get rid of all those nasty english motors. I can't believe they call them "sports" cars with those boat anchors for engines.
:puke

I think the best place to start is by replacing ALL MGB engines with SR20s or Honda Vtec motors. Anything with a 6 should get an RB20/25. Convert them all I say. Yes all the nasty healeys and morgans too. Then once that is done we can replace all split combi engines with EJ22s.

notch nut - it's an XL883L 2007 model (a little customised, wider handlebars and a longer seat so I can fit on the back) - so we dont have it yet, it wont be here till march 2007

I want to keep both too, he says he has too many toys and we will never have the money for a full resto however the car is fine the way it is

I think I'll have to keep working on him
the place won't be the same without the split around !

HEY...........this sounds like something my wife would say...you mean HE thinks he has too many toys?? That doesn't sound like a bloke talking!!! Perhaps just some therapy instead so you can both build up a reasonable "toy" collection!!! If worst comes to worst dump the bike (don't like Harleys, sorry) and keep the split. You can NEVER have too many toys though.....so perhaps some therapy first???

mate you have it so wrong - i want a bloody harley for myself too !!!!!! and I also want a notch - i dont think it's possible to have too many toys !!!!!

I WANT TO KEEP THE SPLIT - HE wants to sell it, not me !!!!!

Another reason he wants to sell it is because we bought the kiddies a trailbike each for christmas and he wants to get a ute or something to tow the kids bikes around - I told him we could just fit them in the back of the Kombi !!

If parking is a problem, park the Harley in the Kombi.

Don't sell the split. Harley's you can buy anytime, splits will become rarer and more expensive. You will regret it.

Teheheh. You can *never* have too many toys! My fiance is getting over the fact that we live in a unit with single garage (Body Corporate B.S. to go with it) and I have 3 cars (2 vw's & XM Falcon & 1 Harley). Oh, she also has a car too! (I keep the unregistered VW & Harley in the garage much to her annoyance as well!) I am the neighbours best friend (I use the term rather loosely as I start work @ 5 - 6am and the neighbours love those days when I ride the bike to work!).
I think you should keep the split and probably sell the Harley. Better still, trade it in for a 2007 Springer Softail w/ 96cui engine. I ride a Sporty 1200C 2000 model. I personally don't like the 883's but apparently if you get them bored out to 1200cc, they have more torque then the standard 1200cc engine. Go figure?
:thumbProbably the best option yet would be to sell the kombi, buy a notchback (early of course), keep the Harley, cruise over to my place and have some :beer:beer:beer:beer.
Just my fifty cents worth....

Is he sure he wont out grow the 883 ? The 1200 might be worth the extra coin. Personally I would keep the splitty.
