is it my carby?

was driving home from soccer last week.. down boronia Rd, changed to 3rd gear, and have her a squirt. once the revs started climbing engine just died. restarted no probs. kept driving for a bit. again at high revs. just before changing from 2nd to 3rd engine cuts out again. wont start again. ended up getting towed home in the rain.

32/36 progressive weber i cannot start the car at all now.

Try the coil... a lot of bad coils seem to play up and miss and fart under heavy load ie in drive at high revs.

Bosch GT-40... not GT-40R.

If you got electronic ignition (petronix) go get another one. It died.

Gt40r used without a ballast resistor will draw excessive current, run hot, burn up points quickly and possibly fail.
Liken it to running a 6v coil on a 12v car!

However, ur engine will start easily!

Maybe a blocked petrol filter?
Symptoms are: can idle & run about slowly, but when you start to go harder it starves for fuel...
Or maybe condenser failing? I've had a few fail in last few years -- sometimes the motor would start, but die after a few seconds.

dont bother checking the condensor just replace it (about 5 bucks i think) get a new set of points while you are at it.

take the coil lead off at the dissy end andhold it with some rubber or something with the end about 4mm away from an earth and crank the engine over you should get a nice bright blue spark. if its orange or yelllow your coil is on the way out, if no spark replace the coil

Hi Damien,
Yes condensers used to be changed , frequently, along with points and dizzy caps and rotor buttons years ago...

Condensers can fail at any time...
and are usually intermittant at first....

Best to replace it....
the GT40R coil is made for a lower voltage...
as someone pointed out....
so they would eventually burn out...

also check the rotor button in the Distributor...
VW Rotors have a resistor built into the top of them...
the resistor can burn out also....
at any time...

Spare condensers and rotor buttons are really a must these days... as well as a fan belt.... and points...
so if You break down the RACV etc can fix Your car for you...

Best of Luck

Lee
