Does anyone know how many type 2 vans were built in Australia?? or where I could find this info?

OK, does anyone have ball park figures for type 2's, especially 1973???
I'm trying to take my kombi back home to the UK and the tax man wants to charge me more in tax than the van cost!!:cry
If I can find out the production figures there is a chance it'll get in as a collectors item. :party
PLEASE HELP!!

Volkswagen Australia would not have a clue. They have only had the Australian franchise for 18 months and have no historical material whatever (I know
because i get occasional emails from their PR department)
The only figure for Kombis I have is that, from 1954 to 1979, 77,000 Kombis were sold in Australia. In the early '60s, when the Australian plant
was manufacturing VWs, 5,000 or more Kombis were sold each year, most of them going to government and corporate buyers. In the early '70s, 50% of
the 1-tonne commercials on Australian roads were VWs - so says my 1973 Kombi brochure.

AUSTRALIAN SALES
Here are some early sales numbers taken from a Sept 1963 VW Bulletin I have in my possession
SEDANS COMMERCIALS
1954 1746 299
1955 5805 546
1956 9230 2989
1957 10384 3072
1958 13759 2895
1959 17747 3255
1960 24652 3944
1961 15254 2549
1962 21370 3234
In 1960 the sedan represented 12.4% of total market and Commercials were 6.0% of the market. 1960 was the best years from the numbers I have.
In 1960 sales of VWs represented 9.2% of all Australian sales.

This may sound like a bit of work, but it could save you a lot of tax.
I have heard that if you take the drivetrain and wheels off a vehicle it is classed as parts only. If you send the vehicle less engine/trans assy and
wheels it is classed as a shell.
Then you may be able to place the stuff inside as 'parts'
See what the authorites have to say about that one!:P

Sure, the 77,000 figure has been mentioned a number of times in Australian magazines like Wheels. Specifically, I'm thinking of an issue from
1982, when they tested the new T3 Transporter. If you buy the Brooklands Books collection for the 1980-1991 Kombi, it has a reprint of that article in
it. Ask your local motoring bookshop.
Hey Bill, thanks for those figures, I looked for old copies of VW Australia's Bulletin a few years ago but only found a few. Those are
interesting. Notice how VW's Australian sales plummeted in 1961, and even in 1962 they weren't as good as 1960. They would have been in the
middle of the major changeover to full local production then, and their return on assets would have been atrocious!
