I paid $550 for a loose vacumn hose :(
Im 99% sure I have been bent over and severely dealt with by a very well known VW mechanic in Sydney.
When testing my bay she ran fine, ran fine for the next 500km after buying it as well then out of no where she ran like shit as if on 2 cylinders. As
Im not that familiar with VW donks I could not work out the problem so off she went to mechanic. Previous owner was very bewildered as well.:o
After a full day of apparent checking, fault finding, syncronising of carbies and handing over $550 I got her back and about 500m up the road she ran
like shit again but the shop was closed for day. Back next day and forked out some more cash for fancy leads etc.
Has just completed drive to Brisbane and back with no problems and then again out of no where the exact same problem and feeling of driving on 2
cylinders and not being able to idle. This time the NRMA guy came and 2 min later he said yep its a vacummn hose that has popped off.
Running great.....................makes me very very suspicious:cry

Well not necesarily bent over. They may well have done everything as listed on the invoice you would have recieved when the work was done. In fact it
is very likley they did. Unfortunatley the hose has a habit of coming off every so often.
It is a hard lesson, and one that is learnt often. Sometimes you pay little to get a difficult job done, and other times it costs a lot to get a small
job done.

Yep I hear what your saying and Im learning more each day but I still have my doubts about the necessary fault finding that took the NRMA guy 2 min to
find especially when I told the previous owner what they did as stated on the invoice and he said that they most of on the invoice had just been done
or nothing wrong with what was replaced.

Don't worry I hear you too. I only take our dubs to mechanics when I cannot do the job myself, and even then I go on good recomendations from people
who have been there before.
In fact last time any of our VW's had any work done by someone else was when I took the gearbox out of the bus and got the gearbox rebuilt.

When we had our kombi we had the exact same thing. It was running perfect one night but the following morning it as running like sh*t. I was at work
so I couldn't do anything about it so told the wife to get 'someone' round to look at it. When I got home that afternoon a guy from Lubemobile was
still there tinkering with it and didn't have a clue and now wouldn't even start, he'd changed everything from sparkplugs to airfilter, buggered up
the timing completely. I refused to pay him and took back all the bits he reckoned he renewed and then spent the next hour getting the thing started
(still ran like sh*t but at least started!). I managed to get it to a mate out at Capalaba and in about 10 seconds says "it's your vacuum on the
back of the manifold" and it was running sweet as. All engines ain't engines-as they say.

I had a problem with a twin carby variant type 3 many years ago...
I can't remember what the problem was...
but I took it to a Mechanic who did computer engine diagnostics.... [with a new fangled computer]
I thought He must be able to fix it....
or at least the computer could...?? lol...
but He changed the plugs, spark plug leads, dizzy cap, rotor button, points...
Which I had already changed...
so the car came back, still doing what it was doing, and all the replaced parts in a plastic bag and a very long computer readout saying "Possible
Fault".... at the start..
and still "Possible fault" at the end...
My Wife took the car there and picked it up, and it was in another town, and as He hadn't charged for all the time spent on the car... I let it
go...
I took the car to a VW Mechanic the next time...
I don't take My VW to any mechanics now, except for engine rebuilds..
If a Mechanic works on Your car for hours....
and still doesn't fix the problem...
All businesses still want to be paid for the time...
not for not fixing it.... just for the labour...
Its a No Win situation....
I have found that a VW Mechanic is like no others....
I bought a beetle from a woman who's brother was a mechanic... the car wouldn't start.. I towed it home...
in a few minutes I had timed the engine and adjusted the carby and it went fine.. there was a piece of rubber glued to the roof above the door.. this
was to stop the door from rattling as the rubber wedge from the door catch was missing... I had a spare... everything this mechanic had touched could
be seen.... as he didn't know VWs....
apologies for the long post and the the rampant stories..

there was a time when people knew how to fix aircooled VWs. that time is now gone, in the same way you wouldn't send a model T to your corner
workshop.
Mechanics make mistakes, cut them some slack. personally, I think $550 is a cheap mistake compared to some I've heard of, but then I can see why
you'd be upset. If you have a relationship with the guy, go back and talk to him, tell him you figured it out and what it was, if he's worth his
salt he'll apologize and you'll know you have a really good mechanic.
worth remember the old adage too,
"It always costs more than you think it will, it always takes twice as long as you think it will".

It's quite likely that the vacuum hose was secure when the mechanic was trouble shooting.
You know the old adage - fix something and something further down the line will fail.
Good to hear it is sorted now though.
