Is your Vanagon watercooled or aircooled?
There are two different auto transaxles used in bay Kombi's... the later and better one, is the same as the one used in the aircooled Vanagon.
I presume that Ray's one would be the earlier type... possibly still compatible if you swapped a few things round and made modifications to the
throttle linkage (totally different setups... late cable is run via the gearbox), but indications are that the early box is hard as hell to get parts
for so is a poor candidate for a rebuild if it was ever needed. It also has rather crappy gearing in comparison to the late one if I recall...
I am not 100% sure but I think thew watercooled Vanagon has a different auto transaxle altogether... try asking Menangler as his wife drives a
watercooled auto Caravelle.
Cheers!
