Nice detail Dave - it is nice for all of us (myself included) to see how important the finer details are in g'box building. Once a box is buttoned up and in a car, one doesn't appreciate all the work involved in getting it right. Good stuff!

Well, the gearbox worked supoib.
Most runs it went thru the finish on the 8000 limiter in 4th gear.

Those are the runs that were above 94mph...see how many were at 95.54mph!

Still stuggling to get it off the line, 'clean' with the two-step,
but got a lot of data recorded, and some personal best speeds (and ET's for Warwick).

Last year best at Warwick was 7.395@93.55,
and best ever in good air at Willowbank is 7.157@94.5, which was my 11.30 run@118.2

Saturday:
7.647@93.17mph
7.572@94.54
7.022@???? erroneous time card, but was crap anyhow.
7.274@94.73 (PB speed and ET at Warwick)
7.218@95.54 good run, on the limiter thru finish, 1.586 sixty foot.
Sunday: 7.35 dial-in
7.558@93.94 Too lean? WIN
7.583@94.14 WIN
7.227@95.54 on limiter (1.56 sixty) BREAK-OUT
7.327@95.54 on limiter BREAK-OUT

Very good runs all day Dave!
Loved what everyone did but certainly appreciated the professional way you go about it.
Were you pretty happy with the relative consistency?
Bigger and better next year.

Thanks vassy66T1,
very happy with engine performance.
I still have to do some homework on the startline procedure
to avoid the bogging starts.

I was using 7000 on the startline in the end and it still bogged on some of those runs.
This is very tough on the tranny.
Perhaps if the car was a little lighter (currently 813kg)
or the clutch could slip a little I might get away with it.

I think with Willowbank's better air it may work.
Shame it is not as fun as racing at Warwick track.

Congrats Dave,

All that work rebuilding the box was worth it hey.

What was the track like?

How did you go with tech?

Hi Nick,
Yes the work with the box was where most of the gains came from i think.
Engine really liked it up around 8000 in 4th gear.
Plus I could go there with the confidence of new gears that did not have 100 runs on them.

The track was especially sticky on Sunday,
and on Saturday depite blasting the tyres out of the hole once I wound up the 2-step,
it was still fast off the line(1.58 I think).

Luckilly Simon(V8 Bug Fame) could do my tech for me at home,
and only had some minor saftey improvement suggestions.
Remembering I had run 147mph in this car it just needs some minor updates, but nothing illegal.

I did my oil change and tappets yesterday
and I am good to go for Jamboree re-run on the 3rd of Nov.

Filter was very clean and only one tappet needed adjustment.
It was .001" loose.
Hardly worth adjusting.
The engine saw 8000 so many times at Warwick I lost count.
There WAS one dog I saw at the track, he probably heard it,
and also when Aaron missed a gear shift... he prob heard that too(infinity plus one)

Sorry fellas,
I did have a bunch of chocolate and macamadamia muffins
and some sesame slice to share around,
but forgot to offer.
Some people did get to try them, so I did not keep them all to my self.
I DID gorge three on the way home for sustanence though.

Hello mactaylor,
My tune down low is a little rich,
but I was leaving the line at 7000 rpm on the 2-step....at which point the mixture is good.

The nature of these 2-step things is an ignition miss,
so they make less power that if it was free reving.

I can leave the line around 5000 using just the pedal if I slide out the clutch,
but my consistency is erratic.
I am trying to devise a throttle stop that holds ropm steady without the miss.

The yanks just raise the RPM limit on launch if the track becomes stickier.
Perhaps I should just pump up my tyres.
...surely I cant leave the line higher than 7000??!!

Well,
I finally got my electricity hooked up,
and tested the lathe out for the first time today.

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n216/dangerous_05/Lathe1.jpg

This is a bus nose cone that I machined off to make it flat again.

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n216/dangerous_05/Lathe3.jpg

You can get these steel 'thrust plate's to help retain the bearing, and prevent the nose cone flogging out in future.

http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n216/dangerous_05/Lathe4.jpg

In the end it cost me more to hook up the power for the lathe, than the actual lathe price!
But now there is nothing stopping me.

What stroke do you think I should make?

makes for a very smooth revving engine with bore = stroke.

Imagine that though 4" bore and 4" stroke.....

Does the word torque come to mind LOL

I have made two cranks in the past.
The first was a 90mm one which I have in reserve in storage,
and the current one is 82.5mm which was made to add strength when the engine was supercharged.

I am thinking of going up to 92mm.
The bore is currently 4.03" = 102.36mm
It will most likely stay within a .25mm of that depending on cylinder wear.

That car is no longer on the market.
It will be returned to the track at some point with possibly normally aspirated power.

Good to hear Dave.

That spare Pauter engine will work well in a light tube car.
There is also a tittle involved if I was a betting man.

So does this mean it will be another junka?
