Best types/Brands of paint for total re-spray at home?
Hi Guys
I've done a spray job on my '73 Bay back in the UK using "Cellulose" paints... just mixed it with the thinners and off you go. I was able to do
this in my car port with good results.
Now I'm contemplating another spray job, this time of my '64 Kombi - the whole thing. I've read some of the topics on here but can't really seem
to find the answers I'm after - What paint system should I be using to do this with good (but not necessarily show-winning) results from home? Are
there any reputable Brands who mix original VW colours?

I have used many well known brands of acrylic laquer with very good results. Dulux , Standox, Spies Hecker, Spartan are all good. Your 64 Kombi is a
very old paint mix and it is not necessarily likley any manufacturer will have the formula to make the colour. If they do it is not likley to be
exact. You are best off getting a modern colour variant off any car that can be made.
For example my 1964 Holden has the colour the same as a 1993 Mazda, so I just get that made up when I want colour.

Huh? When I got the blue and white mixed up for my Bay they just looked it up on a computer and it told them the recipe... I assumed that I could just
get any colour made, in any brand, am I wrong?
Is there somewhere that has the 'recipes' that i can get to give to the suppliers?
So, Acrylic lacquer - is that just a bog standard paint that i thin down with thinners and can 'cut back' after spraying to make it shine?

OK Helbus, I found this on the samba (isnt everything on the samba?!)

It has the colours I need - will they be able to do it from this?
Also, I've seen Glasurit mentioned a few times, Is that an option... I dont know what it is, just read it in other posts.

If you have the paint codes, they can be plugged in to online paint sites and the formula pops up. eg PPG or Sikkens. I've done it with a
few different colours.
Glasurit is another paint brand as well as supplying VW at one time. Dulux here in Oz supplied VW (my '71 bug has the Dulux paint plate on it).

I've looked up both 2K and Acrylic. PPG as an example, you have to know or specify their Acrylic paint line. Others are similar. I
honestly don't know what some manufacturers Acrylic lines are called. I'm a rank amateur at paint, just been investigating the acrylic option like
you are!

Acrylic is the easiest and safest to use at home ie Spartan Supercry, Dulux Dulon, Berger had one called Duracryl etc just about every
manufacturer has one...just ask for acrylic lacquer...easy to fix mistakes..need to polish/buff to get a good gloss
Nitrocellulose lacquer is very old school..really only used nowdays in furniture business and not much i suspect..........but did have advantage of
high gloss level off the gun
2K or Two pack is potentially the best ie tough,gloss off gun, sticks like shit etc..but i think its actually illegal to spray into atmosphere ie you
are supposed to have a booth..th fumes are highly toxic...i know a couple of spraypainters who went into early retirement after breathing 2k
vapours...like spraying enamel to put on..don't get any runs cause there is not a lot you can do about it....repairs require full panel respray

Spray enamel is like whats in those cheap enamel pressure packs...not very durable compared to the others, looses gloss quickly if not
protected...bugger if you get runs

As said 2k is by far the better product but it is highly illegal to use out side a booth as it contains isocyanide and can cause serious heath
problems and death! U can now can an isocyanide free 2k that can be used out side a booth, its not quite as good as the other gear but is by far
better than the other products mentioned.

glasurit is like a brand name covering a range of automotive refinishing products or systems
google it...they appear to be mostly 2 pack materials
look in the yellow pages under automotive refinishing and talk to the suppliers they should br able to give you the info you want.

like vw cool said..if you want to do it at home , use acrylic lacquer
safest option, relatively easy to work with....like any paint job preparation is everything
if the car is straight prob cost around $350 for materials and lotsa elbow action
don't know anything about isocyanide free 2K but it would be worth investigating

any good brand would be ok
i've used spartan supercryl recently and it was fine ..pay attention to the thinning ratio initially i tried to spray a little thick with higher
pressure..terrible result...increased the thinners to 1 1/2 t0 1 and lower air pressure and perfect result
i suspect the preparation more important than possible brand differences..just don't shop on price.

Just because you have a paint name or code does not mean it can always be made by paint manufacturers. Your colour may or may not be able to be made.
There is not a huge guarantee it will be correct off the machine. That is why good spray painters can colour match. Your colour may have to be made by
eye.
You will have to ring industrial automotive paint suppliers and ask them if they can make your colour
Acrylic laquer is the product that has superceded nitrocellulose laquer (since the 70's)
Acrylic is paint, buff shine paint
There are many many many brands, and any from an automotive paint supplier will be good. If you buy it from a store that primarily sells stereo gear
and neon lights, then not as good.
Preparation, experience and good spray equipment are huge factors in final finish, more so than paint brand.
