Scintilla Magneto $200


This was on my engine when I bought it.
It has been modified for racing use to increase its power.
It is used, but worked well when last run about 3 years ago.
Price is $200 plus postage or pick up.
In QLD on Gold Coast 4227

Hi Dave,
what exactly do the modifications do?Will this run a standard engine ok or has it been recurved for a high revs motor?

Hey Dave!
I would also like to know more about magneto ignition.
Silly question perhaps: Does the magneto negate the need for a coil and points? Lawn mowers use them and they produce spark just from rotation alone...don't they?

This magneto is a fully contained ignition system with no external coil.
This one has had mods to increase spark energy, from Burner Magnetos.
I understand that they came with an advance mechanism,
but I think this one is locked,
but it may be returned to full advance movement.

Because it is self contained, it does not matter if you have low battery voltage (6 or 12 volt)
It uses an earth connection to stop the ignition.

Can you find out if it works? if it does do you know what advance curve it runs? would it be usable on a street car? if so am very interested. so it just slips in? no coil or anything? is there points or is it all electronic?

I will find out about the curve, and it should run(will test it in an engine)
and it will slip right in using stock dizzy clamp.
It runs hi rev points.
No external coil, and yes you could run it on the street,
but you would have to fit a switch for the earth connection, otherwise it would keep running(no battery required)

is it possible to hook it up to the ignition so that it turns of with the car? what are high rev points? what effect will this have on the running of the engine? and will unlocking it be a nessesity or could i jsut run it at a constant advance?

Well it runs just fine.
It is actually running in this photo. Set at 30 degrees locked advance.

Hi rev points are those ones with a higher tension on their spring to stop point float at high revs.

The advance mechanism is permanently locked in the base of this Magneto,
with a bakelite drive.
I think that there is a unit that fits inside the base(from the VW industrial engines) that can replace this.
Even with this one locked and installed at 30 degrees, it starts and runs just fine.

I thought about it some more and I think you could wire the ignition key in to a relay,
that will earth out the primary voltage. Perhaps someone else can advise on this.

Here is how you can stop the engine, with and earth to ground.

nice. 30 degrees isn't that bad anyway, can i just wind it back a little so that it runs less than 30 constantly or is that all it can run? will that make it stumble at idle or still be all good? and are hi rev points avaliable at any auto parts shop or will i have to get them from somewhere special?

A relay with 2 sets of contacts would do the job I think. 1 for magneto earth break only and then 12V for everything else that's normally powered when the key is ON.
