air filter question
I have a 72 superbug and on the air filter there is supposed to be a flexible pipe going down throughthe tinware. I think it is called a pre-warmer
pipe. Does this pipe have to be there?? and if so what does it do?. I read somewhere it is for warming the carby?. Mine is missing and I was wondering
if I should replace it.
Thanks Al

Has it got the elbow in the tinware?
Chadmyster,
To the right of the engine pully, is there a pipe sticking up maybe 40mm? Your preheat elbow should be there. If it isn't, up to you
whether you want to replace it or not.
Without pre-heat, you are fed cold/cool air all the time. I suppose the warm air actually helps atomisation as well as emissions. A thermostat on the
aircleaner snout regulates cold/warm air feed as well. In a warm climate I don't think I'd bother. In the bollock cold winter of Canberra, I have it
and run it.

Hi Alan,
It may help in the winter to warm the air going into the carby..
but the air filter should have a flap to close it off in the summer... [I think some may work all the time]
some filters actually had summer/winter marked..
IF You don't have this hot air pipe connected..
make sure the hole in the tinware is covered up...
as much hot air from the muffler will come in thru the hole
I used a round sample plate from a hardware store..
can't remember what they were.. maybe Colorbond??
and I drilled 3 holes and screwed it on...
I have a pic of the heater piece somewhere...

Hi again ,
As You can see I am using another air filter...
If Your carby/intake manifold freezes up in the winter,
then the heater pipe would make a difference...
not many cars have them fitted these days..
they are rare, even in the USA....
same as the Crankshaft bolt cover plate...
I have just refitted mine...
not sure what they really do.....

hi Al,
i wouldnt loose sleep over it
90% of vws have it missing anyway and of those that do have it i would bet nearly all of them have punctured diaphrams in the actuator anyway which
means its not doing a thing
to find out if ur diaphram is good or not d/c the RHS hose on top of ur air cleaner (the one that goes to the vaccum unit) and suck on it
see if u can feel the diaphram pull up or if its busted u'll just keep sucking air and nothing will happen
i had a working one setup in my bug for a while a few years back and it just gets in the way when ur checking/adding oil
i ripped it off and noticed no difference at all and it was the middle of winter.....
it was mainly designed for the snowy areas of germany
but like Lee said if the elbows missing pug the hole some how
