Unfortunate end to a great car

The car known as 'fast-fiat', a turbo VW engined car had a nasty crash last weekend at the PRA finals in CA.
I have seen this car run at a few meets over here, and it is one quick, well built car. How well built can be seen by how Pat still got out of it!
I watched it run low 9's in Vegas, and he drove it 80 miles or so to the track last sunday...

heres the footage...

drove it!! to qualify for a street class that the only qualification for the class was make the drive to the track. Ususally the street classes are non-turbo cars. Pretty amazing...

That is a real shame but I guess that's racing.

There is a six page thread on cal-look forum if you want to read a heap of banter and crap.

All the best for Pat to get back on the track as soon as possible. :sniffle:

It is a Fiat Spider with VW drive train.
Has run 9.40@148mph.
Pat is a top bloke, very friendly and enthusiastic competitor.

Fiat Spiders have a long competition history in the USA with VW power.
Darrel Vittone and Bear Barrilleaux(SP?) both had long standing, record setting,
racing careers in VW powered Fiat Spiders.

A much modified Fiat Spider ...
the door buttons threw Me....
headlamps.....
Tail Lamps looked like Fiat...
as they were usually just fitted to a flat surface...

Maybe a Fiat 124 Spider around 1989 had no door handles....

Jeez, I read about that car in Hot VWs about 20 years ago... Assuming it's the same one, of course. Nice ride

Not the same car..... Pat built this one about 2 years ago..... And he built it from a complete road car.... RLR chassis, EFI/turbo/intercooled stroker and all.... If memory serves, its IRS too.....

I might be wrong but i think its swingaxle, does lummus do irs chassis?
Sad to see so many quick vw's crash like this. theres been a few in the past couple of years, including rollovers etc.
Has anyone got a pic of the fan setup either? it did have an interesting flat electric setup i believe

Speaking of lummus chassis's and crashes anyone heard anything about trents car over here recently?

no it is not a Fiat 124 Spyder

it is a Fiat 850 Spyder, built by Bertone, based on the Fiat 850 Sports coupe, & therefore rear engined

Yes 67 model, Pat's favourite.
Apparently unique for that year, just like euro bugs.
