Steering shaft alignment
Hi everyone.
I pulled the fuel tank out to run the fuel lines for the fuel injection sytem and found that where the steering shaft comes out of the firewall is not
centred in the tube. i then noticed that the arm off the steering box is at an angle compared to the shaft to the steering wheel. (see attached
photo's) the question i ask is, should they be straight? If so am i correct in thinking that i have to rotate the steering box up so that the arms
are straight and that it should be roughly in the centre of the hole in the firewall? obviously this would affect the alignment. It needs a wheel
alignment anyway.

The bracket that holds the box on the beam has recesses in it for engaging on small lugs on the beam. The bracket can be installed 1 way, or reverse,
depending on whether the vehicle is a type 3 or type 1.

looks like ur steering box has rotated on the beam
if u loosen the clamp u should be able to rotate it back
ive got a few beam beetles but its been ages since i;ve worked on any of them
but im sure there are locating lugs on the beam that lock in to the steering box clamp, but u would only need to shove the steering box a few mm
towards the middle to miss these
might be worth checking
cos thats dangerous how it is
