What am I doing Wrong?
Once again my car has been broken into...
i couldnt see anything n the dark last night, but when i got back to my kombi last night i found the sliding door has been busted open and all of my
stuff had been rifled through. i still need to check whats missing but the initial inspection made sure that nothing of value was taken (then again
there isnt much of value in the car in the first place now). very, very pissed off!
im going out to buy an alarm for ColumBUS right now!
what is it about my car that makes thugs think "oooh lots of expensive stuff in there lets break into that one!"

they are probably looking for drugs
you need a sign on window saying no cash or drugs kept on premises

It probably would be a druggie, because forcing open a sliding door would have to be the hardest way to break into a van of any type, crazy
since seeing Wolf Creek I don't like leaving the Kombi or Pajero anywhere, & always a breath of releif when they start :jesus

I dont lock my doors in most cases... anybody with half a brain, even a druggy... who more than likely has only a quarter of a brain, would try the
door first before resorting to breaking it open....
I keep nothing irreplacable in the van most of the time, so it doesnt really matter a great deal if some dickhead gains entry.... tho i'd still be
mighty pised off. :puke
As for the anti-theft side of things... nothing works like disconnecting the coil and hiding the lead!  
Then again, they'd have to find the starter button first hehehe

the sliding door is well busted open, it doesnt shut very well at all. will be replacing it with my new one very soon.
went out and bought new locks, as well as an alarm system, that'll keep the buggers away for sure! here's hoping anyway.

Well, yes and no, with the emphasis on no.
NRMA, for example, recognises three classes of burglary of (and from) cars:
1. Opportunistic
2. Fraudulent
3. Professional
The professionals will, indeed, bypass alarms and overcome locks to get the cars they want - these are mostly late-mode, 'prestige' and performance
cars. Kombis are, by and large, not the target of professionals.
For fraudulent theft, the burglar is the owner so he already has the car keys.
For opportunistic theft there is strong evidence that the theft *is* discouraged by locks and alarms. It *is* worthwhile to have alarms installed and
lock the car, because the oportunist theif might a) move on to an easier choice like your neighbour's car or b) simply not commit the crime.
BTW ColumBUS, Dick Smith do a nice line in flashing red LEDs which you can install for about $5.

There is a certain kind of thief who will damage as standard operating procedure. Where I live in Perth there is a large group of young kids who will
smash a car window before they even try the door. They enjoy smashing things. I never lock my car and always have a window partly down. It's the only
defence. My car is a Herbie. In all probability it is the only car they would leave alone as they greet him with shouts of joy whenever they see him.
In fact they call me Herbie.
PS In the second sentence is the word certain. I mistyped it as cretain. Was that Freudian or just plain too true to be funny?

An alarm is great if it's in YOUR driveway, where YOU will hear it.
In a carpark, be it a railway station, parking station, Kmart, or on George street Sydney, no one gives a shit.
