You can get walls inlaid into standard tyres, however I have heard of them damaging the sidewalls and increasing the risk of tyre failure...
particularly on Kombis and other vehicles with a high center of gravity.
You can get plastic or rubber flappers which are inserted between the rim and inner edge of the tyre which might be better.
there is whitewall paint too, but apparently it needs touching up fairly regularly to stay looking good.
then there are tyres made from the factory as whitewalls but I think they are generally like the old crossply's and dont drive as well as modern
tyres, and again there may be load issues with heavy high cars like Kombis.

Yeah, whitewalls can be added to existing tyres. Make sure your guy is experienced and does not groove to much of sidewall out. We had ours done by a
great guy here in Adelaide who has been doing it for 20 yrs or so. We have run for 20,000 kms on these with no effect whatsoever. Boris has
'flappers'(whitewall inserts) and these have been good to and are easier to keep clean. I have heard of people with flappers though having them
shred on a long journey as they are not designed to spin for long periods at 100kmh+.
Real whitewall tyres can be had these days in modern tread patterns and handling characteristics but cost mega $$$$$.
Plusses and minusses all round really. Good luck with the decision making, either way, they look good and can give your ride a real lift.

watch out with the flappers and your tyre pressure too, as they will wear the wall of your tyre down really bad if you pressure is a little too low
