rewireing .. whats my best option?

i want to rewire Adolf front to back, so i know everything is good electrically. no brittle shit, shorts etc.

he is a 68 auto stick, so theres a little extra wireing...

do i:
1 get a diagram and get an auto elec to worry about it,

2 or try to decypher the diagram and chase all the diff wires, colours, gauges and do it myself? (im retarded with anything electrical/mechanical)

3 is there a kit i can buy to do the lot? or even one for a standard bug, and i'll improvise with the auto stick gear?

thanks all, i have had a look on classic veedubs site, and cip1 and i couldnt find kits on either sites :( maybe i just missed it thou

Damo talk to Ren, he has a new-found love of wiring... seriously. Only problem is that he's pushing it pretty hard just to get Tanaka finished before he goes.

What's it going to be like - getting the wiring from the front to the rear in the roof cavity?

I think it would be pretty tight to get the whole loom through the roof - you would have to ensure the insulation is nice and tight and you lube it up with some silicon spray etc and obviously use a strong trace wire when you pull the old loom out - wrap it really well with electrical tape etc so your trace wire doesn't come off - that would be no good.

I ran plastic tube through my heater channels and then ran a heap of wires through the plastic....I did run some through the roof cavity (to engine bay/rear lights etc) but it was a little tricky.

The watson kit was good but not overly cheap - if you wanted to save money you could just use modern blade style fuse blocks (from supercheap etc) and wire of the right gauges etc. (although it can be hard to get enough colours to differentiate different circuits etc).

Best of luck - I am not great at all with autoelectrics and apart from a faulty horn circuit ground which was running the battery flat in the ragtop, everything else was okay.

try Vintage Wiring Harness in Ringwood... they quoted around $500 for the full loom in original colour coded wiring for my 57 beetle with semaphores, extra indicators and 12volt electrics etc.
just tell them what you need... the guy i spoke to knew alot about Vdubs and their wiring requirements etc.

Hi
$500 for a 57 beetle, in which there is very little wiring...
I did a 56 last year....
the later beetles have the wiring loom along the floor on the LHS...
I also added one on the RHS, as i have seperate wires for all things.... in My beetle.

but getting back to Damians 68 semi auto...
it would be much more than $500....
If You want to save money Damian, just run a heap of wires thu some clear vinyl tubing and change the wires over one at a time.... label every wire at both ends makes things easier...
Biggest problem, is you cannot buy many different colored wire at DSE Jaycar etc... so there are going to be duplications... like 6 yellows 6 reds 6 blues etc...
so You can see why the labelling is important...
I read today where a fellow in the UK rewired a type 3 using all black wires.... Now that would be a pain..??

Most new car burgular alarms these days use all black wires... to make it hard for burgulars....

the autostick electrical diagram is in My website...

I also used a relay for the ignition and the starter circuits..

Hey all,
Im in the middle of re-wiring my 63 at the moment.
I measured my old wiring and put in an order for 20 or so different colours at an auto elec in ballarat by his instructions. Got all the colours i wanted except for one. all i specificed is blue 4mm, blue 4mm colour strip 1, blue 4mm colour strip 2 etc
all the wiring cost $90 with probably $30 of connectors, wont use all of them though.
I have just been copying the old wiring set as i go.
peice of cake.
