giving lifts to randoms
so tonight after mum picked me up from in-town we had to fill up the kombi, and at the servo 2 dudes yelled out to me "hey kombi lady, are you going
north" and we were, so we gave them a lift (I knew of them, we all used 2 play tennis at the same club but we weren't exactly friends or
anything)
i think they were fairly surprised with the kombi, no seat belts and one of the doors flew open coz they didn't quite shut it properly hehehe i think
they thought they were gonna die. it was funny though, definately had a good laugh, drunk people are hilarious (my intoxication could have also added
to the hilarity i guess though!)
does anyone else give lifts to randomish people? any good laughs?

well when i was travelling the 2 canadians i travelled for a month or more with i had only known for about 24hours before they loaded themselves into
my van. and when i eventually broke down in Berry Springs i was given many free rides, a lovely man in a Triburon took me from there into town so i
could use the internet and sort out my situation, and on the way back i got 4 lifts, 2 from older men and one from a young woman with a very young
child in the backseat with me, all of them were more then happy to give me a lift, none concerned at all that i might try anythign stupid, more then
happy to give a solidly built 6'2" guy with a ponytail a ride, even if only for a couple of kms before they had to turn off in a different direction
to where i was going, just goes to show the great and generous nature of so many aussies, especially in the areas where some people may least expect
it.

yeah used to a lot but not so much now with all the freaks around.. some times i like my own company during a drive with my vw..  (greedy i know..)

True true.... I wouldn't trust me as far as I could throw me even tho I am swimming in charm and charisma! 
Then again I wouldnt trust Peter either, and he's one of the shadiest looking blokes alive!  
The moral to this post?.. ya can't trust ANY Kombi drivers :P

when your walking down the road because your kombi just ran out of fuel because the fuel guage doesn't work and you calculated wrong and some nice
kind person picks you up and drops you off at the gas station and then you get a lift back to your kombi with another kind person you learn to
appreciate a lift and if your got a heart you learn to give back to others who are in a similar situation for whatever reason the only time i don't
stop and give a lift is when i have some maniac up my bum and the road ahead is to dangerous to pull over, but then i've spent a few years up on the
far north coast where everybody hitches and everybody gives lifts besides if your driving a kombi you should make an effort to give a lift its a
"kombi thing to do"

yeh i drove past a hitch-hiker the other day in the kombi, but they looked kinda shady and i was by myself so I thought "naaah" but the dude like
stared me down and kept watching me as i drove past...i felt so bad, i should have pulled over
ive never done it before though! it would be so scary!

christmas eve last year, i was passing through the byron area, and and three or four teenagers jumped out in front of the kombi for a lift. Had to
swerve to miss the bastards. i only have 2 seats anyways!

i use to give lifts to people when i lived on the sunshine coast in QLD.
I would always pick up this one kid (about 14-15) who was always skipping school to work at a motorsycle shop.
I also use to pick up a guy who's job i took, i would give him a lift to his new one. I would even go as far as dropping them to the door if it
wasn't far out of my way.
I don't pick up people down here now (nowra) as Schmo said, when you shake hands with people you need to count your fingers.
Also i am not to keen on picking up any females standing alone as you just don't know who else is standing in the bush waiting.
Quite said really, but its a way of life now.

I have walked a lot of miles because people are wary of picking up someone that looks like me.
Picking people up depends on circumstance.
A guy leaning against a post with his thumb out can whistle. Someone walking, who is gunna get there if he has to walk ALL the way, gets a lift.
Locals trying to get home from Doylo RSL.
Anyone carrying a petrol tin.
Anyone sitting on the side of the road with a carload of kids. (Been there, done that too).
Fact is, I'll give a lift to just about anyone.
I once picked up 2 Hari Krishnas at Raymond Terrace & dropped them at Buladelah. That was an interesting trip.
Well my friends are gone & my hair is grey, I ache in the places where I used to play.

What is the longest you have sat??
I sat at 3 Ways (Darwin/Adelaide road meets Qld rd) for 4 1/2 days :P
On the up side - got a lift on the 5th car. It was wet season. Not many people out there.
I wasnt gunna walk anywhere there Spook. Didnt know where the bloody road went :P
Been dropped off at some bugger of places too.
Got dropped off once at the intersection of Coral Bay on the Exmouth Rd, WA at about 6.00 pm.
Told me it was shearing season and some one ALWAYS came by. Walked 15kms through the bloody desert to get to the pub.
Coming on dark and the road/track turned into dust.
Followed the light of the town till i found it.
Turned out it wasnt the light of the town but the moon sitting below the horizon. Just happened to be in the same direction!!
Bloody lucky i am still alive! Didnt know where i was!!
Enjoyed THAT beer when i got there!

I started hitch hiking to the beach as a kid. I hiked all over England, Ireland and Wales in the 70s. I still pick up hitch hikers as I doult if I
will ever pick up so many people that I will ever balance the books.
The best ride I ever got was from Melbourne to Sydney in the 1960s in a new Mini Cooper S. He was a cop who patrolled part of the Hume Highway. He
knew it well and we flew.
The coldest was coming back from Armadale down the Newell Highway on a clear winter's night in an unheated car. It's the coldest I have ever been in
my life.
The strangest was going from Armadale to Sydney and playing leap frog with a 1950s Rolls Royce which was being driven at about 50 mph. I passed it
about 8 times in other cars going short distances. I started to wave at them as I passed them. They ignored me. I would reappear on the roadside and
they still passed me when it was clear that I was a safe hiker. I waved to them and jumped up and down, but they just ignored me.
On long hitches I drove many times. Some people picked me up so that I could drive for a while so they could have a rest. Once I drove a new Prince
Skyline. What a car.
I gave a driver whose car had broken down a lift in my buggy once. I drove the buggy like I'd stolen it, he was terrified and he is the only hiker
who didn't thank me for the lift. LOL.
In the 1970s there was a famous hitch hiker in Australia who dressed as an English "business man in the City", in a pin striped suit, bowler hat and
with an umbrella. He is supposed to have got lifts easily, because people were so intruiged that they gave him lifts to find out what his story was.
There was another who made a suit case out of a new plastic jerry can. People stopped because they thought he needed a lift to a service station.
I found that I could get lifts easily if I dressed well, had a new looking case and had a big sign on it that said what my destination was.

A mate of mine i went to uni with picked up a bloke (in the non sexual sense) on the side of the road on the way to phillip island, they gave him a
ride to his front door, somewhere in cowes . I get a call saying you have got to see this blokes back yard... he has several old porsches (mates are
not vw/porsche nuts) , sure , sure what ever! my reply.... a week or so later my mate Sam came over and told me in great detail what was there ....
the bloke they gave the ride to paid them for the lift with a 15 wood grain Nardi signature steering wheel....
Sometimes it pays to help out.
The wheel is fitted to a 96 magna now..... oh the shame!!
