Golf autos

Can anyone tell me if they have had any chronic issues with Golf auto transmissions. I am a fan of manuals, but my wife is not and I am looking at switching from manual to auto in a daily car.
So be great if someone could give me some tips as to what to look for with Auto transmissions when buying etc.
Cheers
H

Not really up to speed in models but i have heard stories and they may be just that, that the manual box is dearer to rebuild than an auto. 94 models and on anyways. Otherwise it is just a car take care of it and it will take care of u. Nearly all mid 90 models and on are Auto anyway, so they must have sorted out the bugs somewhere. If looking to older 70/80models be careful as age and lack of power are something that hurt any car.

Ok so long time but i picked up the GL Golf95mod with 90,000 on the clock and 4spd auto.
Gotta tel u and i am not at all fond of the whole front wheel drive scenario, but i couldve drove this baby anywhere. So quite and smooth in the changes. Cant see any problems with the auto even giving it a bit of stick still smooth and no jerk between the changes.

Make sure you do regular oil changes on the auto box with genuine or equivalent trans fluid !!

Yeh, pays to do maintanence. Vw have specified that there is no major service at 100,000k's, what u reckon? They said as long as minor services are done every 12-18,000 then it should be all it needs.
