VW Camping
I don't know why but camping and VW's seem to fit so well into the same sentence.
Camping in your VW (if it's a Type 1) is not recommended for two consecutive nights but highly recommended for busses and wagons.
Below are some ramblings and pics of Chandlers and my trip up to the Barrington tops first weekend of the school holidays.
We got two hours out of dubbo, just as it started to rain and darkness fell the motor completely dies. Turned the Dog-O-War over 6 or 7 times while
waiting for the hour and a half for the NRMA adjusting this and that but no luck. Eating a roadside tea when NRMA arrives and walks up to it and it
starts. So anyhow the dog runs perfectly into Merriwa and 10k's on the Scone (Desolate) side it dies again. No spark what so ever and sourced it
as the coil.
Rolled the Dog-O-War with my worried son into a driveway and slept the night as two hours had passed and not a single car had gone passed. Bedtime
9.30pm.

Two trucks and 1 car had passed through the night - all going the wrong way. Woke up and found a train line (Behind fence) above us and 20 feet away.
Would have been interesting hearing a train come throught the night. 11 hours after break down a car reluctantly stop because I'm standing in the
middle of the road and I send a message into Merriwa for a coil.
Chandler enjoying breakfast. Our backs surprisingly ok after sleeping across the seats.

Via Newcastle to pick up some money (Bloody pin card died as well) we headed up to Barrington Tops to camp. Drove straight past the Klub VW People and
headed for Polblue right at the top.
Set up camp, stoked the fire and sipped port telling the biggest lies we could think up. Chandler learnt how to play 21 and Blackjack with another kid
camping up there.
Woke in the morn straighter than the night before.

Research sites.
That morning we visited some of my old research sites from University.
This one is a lava flow from on of the 25 volcanic plugs that makes up the Tops.
Note how the magma has burnt the soil below and cooled into vertical hexagonal pillars. I love this place.

This is a section of the 120 million year old Beech Forest on the tops. Massive trees towering so high you can't see the tops. The canopy is so
dense in places its nearly night time in the forest and nothing can grow on the forest floor but fungi and mosses.
Chandler was blown away by the trees and how quiet it was.

Last one.
Finally we stopped at the eastern side of the Tops at the huge Basatic flow. This huge rock formation cut into is also from the previous volcanic /
geologic activity but the lava was far less viscious and ran in thicker flows cooling slower into the solid rock layers we see today. This flow is in
two layers actually. Magnificient to see.
Need to plan some fieldtrips with the kids up here.
Anyhow it was cut short by my Graduation BBQ in three hours back at Newcastle. In all we only had 5 hours site seeing up there. Quickly called into
Marks (MR930's) place and then the Barrington camp to also say Hi to the fellow Klub VW Offroad members but nobody around. All off having fun as
usual.
Four days prep before two Stockton days and then the Nats. Needed to research so serious mudholes for a good coating of Newcastle Mud to take to
Sydney.

Great pics Bronze!
Our camping with the Kombi isn't roughing it as much yet with the youngest being only 15 months old. We pull a camping trailer for ease of setup
as sometimes I head up the coast early on a Friday (with my wife coming up later via train after work) with the two girls and trying to keep track of
both of them as well as setting up tents was a pain in the proverbial, especially in adverse weather conditions.
We love to get away whenever we can and Amy (4 years old) is right into the camping lifestyle (including possum spotting!).
Must post some pics also at some stage

Great stuff Steve. :thumb:thumb
Just to show you that you're not the only one it happens to, here's a picture of my first kombi about 40 minutes North of Walhalla, where I
blew the clutch. Since we were stuck, we decided that we may as well set up camp.
We stayed 10 days while I managed to get home, pick up tools and another vehicle, etc. and finally changed the clutch with the kombi jacked up onto a
couple of big rounds of gum that I cut up with the chainsaw.
It was an interesting epic, being the first time I'd removed a VW motor. I didn't know about the return fuel line in a FI vehicle and
managed to dump a heap of petrol on myself while I was pulling the motor from under the vehicle, with the campfire roaring about 30 feet away! :o
I dropped the motor off the jack and had to wait until some deer hunters came past and helped me lift it back up. That was after I discovered that a
kombi motor can't be removed with the help of an engine crane (after carrying the thing for 3kms), although it came in handy for lifting the
kombi up onto the blocks!!
We had to ration our water, and even had snow (yes its cold up there in September!!), but it was one of the best camping trips I've been on!!!

o O ( I think I'll check the clutch before my next trip ).
Their a pain when it happens but I love these type of stories.

VW camping
Here's some pics of our Kombi from our latest camping trip up the beach in Jan 03
Don't have a horror story to tell like Col, as our trip this time went without incident.
