The turbo's are different spec depending on year from 2001- 2004 they have a different spec due to variable valve timing on the later models.

This is my Volkswagen, there are many like it, but this one is mine. Without me my Volkswagen is useless, without my Volkswagen, I am useless.

Ok here are the main different turbos :

North south
Audi A4 and Passat

East West
Polo gti , beetle turbo , audi a3t/golf gti / Audi S3

Are you sure its for a petrol engine as well . Mk3 golf had TDI . Im not going to go into the later cars cause not many people use those turbos

The Passat and A4 have a KO3 that the inlet runs 180 degree s opposite the exhaust housing . The B6 S-line A4 has a larger exhaust wheel

The Polo gti has same turbo as golf gti/Audi A3t . The beetle turbos generally come with a muffler on the outlet pipe before it hooks up onto the rubber hose section . All these turbos have the inlet and exhaust housings at 90 degrees from each other and are interchangeable

The Audi S3 is a KO4 which has inlet and exhaust housings opposite each other or at 180 degrees .

There is generally some numbers on the turbo , if you post it up we can narrow it down as to which turbo you have :thumb

Thanks to all, the turbo was sold, though not to the guy who was being picky about what it came from.

I posted it off to a guy who bought a harness.... but thats another story :cry
