Liam's Early Type 3 Squareback
After over 1.5 years of searching for an early squareback, i have finally got one. I am pretty sure it is a 1965. It has been converted to 12v and
disc brakes.
It needs a bit of TLC and attention to the usual rust spots in the floor pan. It isn't as rusty as others i looked at though. I spent saturday
afternoon cleaning the previous owners junk from everywhere and giving the interior a good clean which left the seat trim in better nick than i
thought.
The engine is a twin carb from a later model which seemed to run fine, the clutch/gearbox will also need some attention.
Overtime after it is registered and on the road I plan on slamming it, white walls, roof racks and some other bits and pieces.

Looks great... I want one, all I need is some money. What year did 4 bolt start? I thought it was 68. You may have a later pan on an early body or
an IRS and disk convertion.
In thesamba.com there is some info on how to decode your VIN to see the exact year. If you pm me the vin I could help you find out. It would be
interesting to find out if you have a different VIN on the pan than on the body.

Well done Liam, I knew you would find your square eventually, one and a half years sure beats seven years in the desert. Did you find this in
canberra? How much rust did you find under the seats/ carpet? I just had some work done on mine, front tie rods & wheel align/balance
$198.00...exaust repair $150.00..new shocks $300.00. sand and fish oil/paint floor pan$200.00 ...full tank of gas$23.20,driving an early square at
65mph with windows down, pop outs extended and engine tuned..PRICELESS! Enjoy
How many is enough?

Yeah, it was found on the other side of Canberra that i live on. After a good vacuum under the carpet... there really isn't that much rust in it to
tell you the truth which is good.
I am aiming to have it on the road, slammed and rimmed by June long weekend for the DSK Split Together.

Very nice find. So solid looking!
Mine 66 squareback is still sitting under the carport waiting for me to do something with it. The floor pans behind both front seats are gone!!! Fred
Flintstone style!
I'm aiming to start work on it shortly. Bet you've all heard that from a VW nut before.

Sorry mate, I live in Tuggeranong 5 minutes up the road from where you picked yours up from. The type 3 was in Mitchell / Belco.
I went for a road trip today, found some bits + pieces for the roof racks.

If the interior is correct then it's a 1964 model.

Nah mate, It is still sitting in the garage at the moment. I have a trip to melbourne this weekend with the mrs that i have been saving up for. Once
this is out of the way it is full steam ahead on the type 3. Just collecting the essential parts for it, getting it rego'd and on the road, then the
fun stuff after that.
I will get my brother Marty to help out with all the engine work. He is head mecahnic at Beetle Exchange in Canberra.
I am def hanging on to it, not many out there and I know how hard they are to find in decent condition.

Got the girl startedon Saturday, got a new battery... hooked that up, ran some new fuel lines and started her up and took her for a quick spin to see
what needs doing. Apart from needing a major service she is mechanically good to go. There was no problem with the clutch and it is the quietest
gearbox I have had in a type 3 (this is my 3rd), not much play in the steering either.
Happy days.
